Don't like the rear slide treatment on the Steyr for some reason. Looks kind of tacked on. Sticks too far back behind the grip or something.

I thought about picking up a Smith M&P as I really liked the one I shot.

I ended up getting another XD because all the mags, holsters, etc all interchange. I only had to learn one gun as did my wife. The XD seems to have more aftermarket support right now.

Although the M&P I shot was very reliable, I have seen one first hand break that even the PD armorer could not fix. Through my research there seem to be some bugs to work out but that can happen with any new gun. The clincher for me was that someone told me it was an updated Sigma. In comparing it quickly to a Sigma I saw their point. I have owned two Sigma's in the past and one broke dry firing before I ever made it to the range and the replacement broke within the first 100 rounds. The great thing is that Smith and Wesson made it right every time.

My XD .40 tactical is at Springfield now for finish issues and to have them check the trigger as it is a little mushy. There customer service has been first rate and they have told me they will refund my shipping expense. I do wish they would sell spare parts, but the way they take care of you it is hard to complain.

In the end, I think both are good guns, but I have seen too many first hand problems with Smith polymer guns for me to spend my money on one even with their great service.

For your use I would go with the tactical that inch of length makes shooting more acurate.

I can conceal a tactical almost as easy as a small gun. I am a big guy though. If I want a deep cover I would go with a pocket pistol like Kel-Tec P11. But it is not a fun range gun.

Good reason to stay with the 9.
