I have a completely separate question, but it involves lube, guess I should have started a thread but here goes.
How often do you lube an unshot gun. I duck hunt a lot, so as soon as season is over I clean my guns and they sit till next season, then get abused, cleaned maybe once then lubed and sit another year. I have no problems with these guns so far, but they are 870's and nova's so they can take the abuse. Now my question is, say I don't shoot my XD for three months, should I be lubing it every month or so, or not? Looking at it right now, the lube looks dry but you can feel a THIN film.?? |

now guys....im no expert...just an avid shooter and gun lover, so take my advice just as that...advice and not fact.
as far as the firing pin channel goes, i will remove the firing pin and rub oil on it as opposed to dropping it in the hole, but thats just me. as far as un-fired guns go....i dont have that problem |

With some gun oils and cold weather I have light primer strikes when I oiled the striker. It will solidify and slow things down. I will use any lube in warm weather but something like FP-10 year around or in cold weather. Alternately I have used oil and then an air hose to blow it all out so that it is pretty dry but not quite steel on steel.

In the past, several XD owners have had FTF problems due to excessive lube in the firing pin channel. Excessive lube acts like a shock absorber with the fluid dampening the striker. Clean it out thoroughly, and the problem goes away. mrwildroot

I just drop the stuff in behind the striker and let it spread. I have yet to have a problem with build up or misfires. Again, I think a CLP type product is best since it will clean as it is applied, but not all CLPs are alike. The ones that I mentioned have no solvents that will evaporate into the air and be of no use later on. The base oil itself is the solvent on these so it will keep junk in suspension even when firing. I really like the WS-CLP, best I have used.

I do not recommend Militec 1. It is an additive designed to be used in other base oils, not as a stand alone product.
