17 rounds in a 16 round mag?

I am easily able to load 17 - 9mm rounds in the wife's 16 round mags. Could this cause the mag spring to fail early or any other problems? The gun gets to the range 2 or 3 times a month with approx 300 rounds a month (between the wife and 12 year old son) so the mag spring does get a chance to relax every now and then. Your thoughts are appreciated.

17 rounds will indeed fit, but the magazine operating capacity was set at 16 due to the spring tension. It will probably work for awhile, but eventually will cause the life of the spring to be reduced. Not really worth the 1 extra bullet in my opinion.

I agree that 1 extra is not needed at the range, but for carry, the more 9mm friends the better.

If you need lots of rounds, cary an extra mag. And only put 16 in each of them for the reasons already stated.

Do you find that it is harder to fully seat the mag when 17 rds are in it? That was the case for me when I inadvertantly loaded 17 at the range and had a FTF because the mag was not fully seated. I won't be doing that again.
IMHO it is better to carry the spare mag than to overstuff the mag in the gun. I like to keep everything in the design parameters.

I noticed it a little while ago and I'll put 17 every now and then but most of the time I just put in 16. I've only used it at the range and theres really no need to crunch the spring down that much if I'm just target shooting.
