really stupid question...
But why does the barrel look tilted up when the slide is back? Is this normal for all XD's? My friend's 1911 doesn't do that. I did see a gif of a video clip of some semi auto firing in slo mo and noticed same tilt up, but I have no idea if the gun in this gif is an XD.
Anyway I really gave no thought to it till yesterday when my friend came by to do some shooting, and he pointed it out. |

Its normal for ALL polymer guns, Glocks and M&P's included. You have a floating barrel in there.

Its a locked breech design and the reason that the 1911 doesnt do that is because it uses a barrel link which acts as a cam to lock the barrel, the XD's barrel must tilt up and down in the breech area to lock and unlock as the weapon cycles.

All auto pistols that use the browning short recoil system have barrels that drop down at the breech and look somewhat angled when locked open.
The 1911's link is the same as the machined "cam" on newer designs of auto pistol. It just uses different geometry to do it. There is a great animation from STI available in a screen saver format here. http://www.stiguns.com/downloads.html Also this website has some great slow motion video of different firearms. http://www.sscmagnum.de/hochgeschwindigkeitsvideos.htm

I was under the impression that the barrel and attached feed ramp tilted to aid in the chambering of the next round during the cycle...

Yep that is part of the Short Recoil system invented by John Browning.
