This has been a most sobering yet enlightening thread.
Thanks to the OP, I am much more aware of the dangers that lurk within our sport. Thanks for sharing.

Update:

I sent in the package yesterday after talking with Springfield, first question was if I was ok, then they asked about the ammunition.

According to the nice lady I spoke with from the repair shop, the warranty does no cover ammunition. So apparently if it were a factory kaboom, you would have to take it up with your ammunition provider.

I sent it in next day air, as requested, with the RMA number I was provided. It cost $48 for shipping, mostly because I think the guy I was working with didn't know what he as doing.

The package arrived this morning, and I plan on calling either later today or tomorrow to check on the initial status (make sure it got there alright)

I was also told that when replacing the frame they replace it with a new serial number with the letter "R" in front of the number and a certificate explaining the mismatched serial numbers. The frame costs $59 I believe.

So hopefully this will be as painless as possible.

I will keep you posted.

Yep...same thing I experienced. The letter explains that the serial number on the frame is now the serial number of the gun and to please refer to it for all future communication. You wont have to call them....they will call you soon enough.

Anyone else have some suggestions? (I might also send them the rest of that batch of ammo... just in case)

I would be stunned if they did anything other than just replace the gun since it would carry such a legal liability to endorse using any of the remnants.

Not surprised the barrel held, since 1911 .45 barrels usually withstand a "double charge" overload without damage. The reason your frame blew apart is because it's plastic (duh!).

Sorry, but I suspect SA will stamp "unsafe for use" on what's left and say you need a new gun.

I read a thread a long time back about a guy who got into reloading and at first..... thought that "grain" and "gram" were the same thing. That led to a batch of reload ammo that blew up his new 1911 as I recall.
