We have a progressive press which suits our large ammo needs now. We also went out and bought a digital scale to weigh our rounds against control loads so we won't (hopefully!) have anymore mishaps like this in the future.
How were you weighing them up until now?

I'm willing to bet it is a learning curve problem with the Dillon more than a problem with the single stage, I recently tried to upgrade to a progressive press and had several squibs, I've never had problems like that in the past except with a progressive, I KB'd a 1911 I built myself with a double load of Unique assembled on a friends lee progressive I've also had multiple problems with a Hornady progressive 12 gauge press. As long as I stick with turret presses I dont have problems.

sorry to hear that

I have watched that happen myself, I was on a range last summer, just after I bought my XD-9 and there was a guy there shooting an XD-45, which was really hard to find in Alaska during that time. We were next to each other in lanes, and he had a case-head separation that blew the slide stop about 15 feet to the left, and left the same crack in the frame that I saw on the pictures on this thread. I never did hear what happened, but his hand looked the same as well. Good luck dealing with SA, and I'm glad to hear that you're OK.

Thats why you gotta be careful with reloads, especially if you're the one reloading. The XD is pretty rugged, but imagine if you got shrapnel in your face or worse. That's why I don't fire reloads anymore, just factory ammo, its whats recommended and thats typically all I'll shoot.

Glad you're still with us and a bloody hand is all that happened to ya.

I find the exact opposite of reloads. I would rather reload them myself and rely on myself to check each round as it's being made versus buying factory ammo and having absolutely no idea if there was a mishap in the making of a single round. Sure, it's a huge responsibilty relying on ones self manufacturing ammo but a responsiblity i'm willing to except. Dont' get me wrong, i'm not saying for a second that I couldn't make a mistake because I once made a powderless squib which has now made me much more aware of what is going on while reloading.

I own a Dillon press and gotta chuckle when I see people say they make 500 rounds a hour on theirs. Sure it's possible but for crying out loud what the hurry, slow down and "insure" your making safe ammo. I hang a light on my press and visually inspect every round in the bullet seating position to insure the right level of powder is in each case. Slow down and enjoy!

Glad your OK after this incident and carry on as usual. I'll bet you'll make the finest reloads available after this education.

Is it just me or does it look like he might not of sized the cases all the way down ? I caught a few 40cal cases that I didnt fully resize and they would not fully chamber. I dont know if they xd will fire OOB but that looks like that might of been what happened.

Be careful reloading

It was probably fully in battery but the double charge was looking for the weakest place to exit which would be at the base of the brass.

I just started loading for the first time about a month ago. There was a learning curve but it was not that hard. I went slow at first but things start to get going on their own once you get the routine down.

I went with the Dillon 650 because of the powder check option. It checks under charge / over charge in each piece of brass before I set the bullet. It took the biggest worry I had about reloading out of the equation. The other thing I do is sneak a peek as the brass moves to the next station. I would be able to see a gross charge if it had happened.

Right now I could comfortably make about 500 rounds in an hour and feel very confident about the finished product.

Glad to see you were OK after your KB. Hope you get your XD back up and running without any snags.
