always take precaution when reloading no matter what kind of reloading machine you're using. it's a good thing only your pride was hurt and a bit of flesh wound, what if the gun really blew up in your face, that would really ruin your day or your life. always wear shooting glass, hearing protector and have a competent range officer by your side when firing.

A few years ago I was shooting/qualifying with my duty Sig P226 9mm and we use to do failure drills. We would load a smaller caliber round in the chamber so after you shoot it, the case will not eject and then you have to clear it and shoot again. Well I once shoot the round and cleared it manually and then shot again. The gun slide puffed up like a puffer fish, the barrel was sticking out of the end of the slide about an inch. The range instructor sent the gun into Sig and they said that the 38 round was in the barrel and I shot a 9mm round on top of it which caused the kaboom. The gun held up great and I was not injured at all. It did scare me. Sig replaced everything that was broken, for free. Our dept doesn't do failure drills like that anymore. What an eye opener. You think if you had a steel gun, that you would not have been cut? That kind of damage freaks me out.

That is not a good way to train. Very bad idea. Whoever the "instructor" was needs to be fired.

I do not think I would try and rebuild that weapon. I would just order a new one. Yes it is expensive but everything in it has been over pressured and over stressed.

Springfield covers damage under their warrenty, they may make me pay for some or all of it, but i will have them rebuild it.

  • Always wear safety glasses while shooting. Yes, I am weak in this area myself as several photos around the internet can attest. This is a good reminder for me to correct that,
  • Guns 'blow up' about as frequently with 'store bought' ammo (including range ammo, commercial reloads, etc) as they will with your reloads.
  • Your reloads, carefully assembled, are the safest ones you're going to get.
  • Often, but not always, there are conditions with the gun itself that contribute to a blow-up.
  • Single-stage presses are, if anything, safer than progressive presses- because you can visually check each round at each stage of the loading process.
  • The key to safe reloading is to get the right amount of the right powder in each case, and to have a means of confirming that before proceeding to the next one. Once accomplished, you must get the bullet seated to the right depth and apply sufficient crimp to insure that it stays there until fired. A mistake in either area can cause a drastic pressure spike and wreck the gun.

I've reloaded since the mid-70s.....handgun, rifle, and shotgun. You nailed it right on the head! People who believe single stage presses contribute to reloading accidents don't understand the basics of reloading, IMO.

As for the original poster, I am very glad you suffered no serious injuries.

I don't blame the single stage, its a great piece of equipment. However, I do blame myself. Do to the volume of ammo we reloaded at first with that press, I think we may not have taken the time we should have with checking them all for powder weights. We have a progressive press which suits our large ammo needs now. We also went out and bought a digital scale to weigh our rounds against control loads so we won't (hopefully!) have anymore mishaps like this in the future.
