Looks like the XD held up pretty well considering the KB. Glad you can still count to ten.

Quite the story, glad your OK.
Very curious, let us know if they replace the barrel.

I'm thinking they would at least magnaflux check it for cracks if it was not such an easy replacement item. I.E. old firearm, this would seem like a good check. XD, probably replace it.

To be honest reading something like this makes me not want to even think about reloading in the future ....but I guess the same can happen from store bought from the other stories in this thread .

Wooowzaa! I guess that would be a case head seperation failure?

I had an AR KaBOOM a couple years ago. I ended up with a stipled chin and small chunks of rifle stuck in my left forearm and just below my left collarbone. I literally dropped the rifle and began checking myself in a semi-controlled panic. My Kaboom was with Federal ammo. In all my shooting of two calibers of pistol and one rifle I shoot 85% reloads. I think with reloading it is important to track how often a batch of brass is used. Even though it looks good after a few reloads it may be best to recycle it than to reload it.

One more thought on reloading. Single stage presses might be great for working up small amounts of super dooper custom ammo but if you're reloading lots of ammo which might be the case with pistols I'd highly recommend either a good turret press or progressive press. It would be darned difficult to get a double charge.

hello bro,
hmmmm reload, double load for sure, one should always be careful when it comes to reloading. i once experienced a reloading problem, a squib load that totally cracked the barrel of my taurus pt145. i still used reload in all of my shooting session but they come from a reliable reloading company. hope i won't experience a KABOOM or else there won't be any way a can get a replacement here for my hs40 tactical.

Having been on LE ranges for the past 27 years (and a reloader for over 30) I have seen a few guns crack up. I have also seen the results of some 'reloading errors', a few of which were my own. Here are a few things I've learned along the way-
  • Always wear safety glasses while shooting. Yes, I am weak in this area myself as several photos around the internet can attest. This is a good reminder for me to correct that,
  • Guns 'blow up' about as frequently with 'store bought' ammo (including range ammo, commercial reloads, etc) as they will with your reloads.
  • Your reloads, carefully assembled, are the safest ones you're going to get.
  • Often, but not always, there are conditions with the gun itself that contribute to a blow-up.
  • Single-stage presses are, if anything, safer than progressive presses- because you can visually check each round at each stage of the loading process.
  • The key to safe reloading is to get the right amount of the right powder in each case, and to have a means of confirming that before proceeding to the next one. Once accomplished, you must get the bullet seated to the right depth and apply sufficient crimp to insure that it stays there until fired. A mistake in either area can cause a drastic pressure spike and wreck the gun.
  • Plastic or aluminum-framed guns will never stand a case-head failure as well as steel-framed guns will.
Tyler and I have emailed back & forth and he knows I'm not busting his chops. Things like this are a bummer, but the silver lining behind this cloud is that nobody was seriously hurt; and it serves as a reminder to all of us reloaders to take our time and check things as we go.

Tyler, I hope springfield takes good care of you on this. Thanks for having the gonads to man-up on this. We can all benefit from your experience, unpleasant though it may have been.
