This was posted on the ofcc.org board today regarding the MP
"As of Tuesday morning I received a notice from our ordnance department that we had an AD with a S&W MP40. This apparently happened when the magazine was removed (Our guns have the magazine disconnect installed.) The Officer pulled the trigger and the weapon discharged. No injuries were reported as it was pointed in a safe direction. So those of you having a magazine disconnect on an MP40 (or any MP model for that matter) should use caution and don't rely on this feature. I will post follow ups as information becomes available, Ordnance was supposed to be in contact with tech support to determine how and why this happened. Currently it doesn't look like a maintaince issue, and hopefully it's not a design "Feature". The XD may made in Croatia but I sure haven't had the problem mentioned above. I'm also probably going to pick up a .223 CZ to add to my "bunch" tomorrow. For a bolt action it sure doesn't jamb and I don't need an electronic scope to hit the bull at 150' like the AR's do. Well...you can't stop a bad guy with your ammo laying on the floor...plain and simple. That in itself is all I need to know about the M&P. No thanks.

The M&P 9mm did pretty well in the Guns and Ammo Handguns 2008 Annual Polymer Police Pistol Shootout for test performance.
The pitted guns were the M&P 9mm, Glock 17, XD 9 Service and H&K P2000. They used a Para Ordinance LDA as the benchmark for reason given in the article. The biggest surprise to me was the H&K's showing. It was the worst overall and only did well in ergonomics.

If you look back to the first post in this thread, I gave a link to that "Shootout" evaluation, and actually that's what first got me interested in the M&P. The M&P actually WON in terms of accuracy in that shootout. So I think that, at least in 9mm, the M&P has the potential of being a very accurate shooter. What eventually turned me away from it and caused me to go with the XD9 sc, is all the other issues that have come up about the M&P in this thread, most specifically the issues with the trigger (yes I tried it, and much preferred the XD's trigger); a higher-than-expected percentage of problems with rust on brand-new, stainless steel M&P pistols; and the problem with the magazines that is mentioned in several posts in this thread.
I've got nothing against the M&P, in fact I expect it's going to turn out to be a fine pistol once some of the bugs related to being new are worked out, but I personally still feel that RIGHT NOW, the XD is the best choice. |

You can't answer that question with putting personal preference in to it. If you go by malfunctions vs rounds, the Beretta wins. If you go by use around the world, BHP (and clones) and Beretta win. If you go by design, Walther P38-Beretta copied/modified the design to make thier great firearm. If you go by ruggedness, the Makarov, 1911A1 and Ballister-Molina jumps into the mix.

Trigger issue with M&P seems to be isorated with 45. Its mushy, and hard to tell when its gonna go bang. Sort like way Glock one is. My M&P9's trigger is about as crisp as any XD tho |

I own an M&P 40 and shot it against an XD40 Service today back to back. I shot both equally well. They both have their "feel" difference and merits. No bashing here. I like them both.. AND Glock.
