HS2000 - finish on slide

Some substance got on the slide of my HS2000 and now I've got some unsightly bare spots. Anyone know what the finish is on these guns?
Thanks in advance.

Well, since you are one of the old timers on board,
I will tell you gently! From the description, a pix would
sure be nice, it sounds as though you put your machine
into a safe for protective keeping and forgot to wipe
it down with a good coating to protect it.

Of course it could be a case of RUST. The Burnial
finish on the early XDs (HS2K to us) are well known
for their rust problems. Modern day XDs have a new
treatment finish similiar to Tenifer, it's called Mellonite.

Many HS2K and XD owners, myself included, have opted
for a DuroCoat finish to help protect the machine from
the evils that are waiting to attack any firearm.

Please look at the Rust forum section.

I don't feel like an old timer. I signed onto the board when I got my HS to learn how to adapt other hi-cap mags to the HS, since the ban was still in effect.

Since then I only drop in every couple years for a few minutes.

This wasn't rust that caused the issue. It was some substance in my shop that dripped and removed parts of the finish. My nicest Mauser is missing some spots of blue also.

Appreciate the info. The gal I contacted at Springfield Inc didn't know, so she couldn't quote the correct process/cost.

I didn't know there was a rust issue, no problems with that....yet.

No one knows for sure. Bruniral is the name given to it. One member has said that the structure looks like parkerizing under high magnification, but another reported that chemicals that strip parkerizing did not touch his finish. So think of it as a parkerized type finish.

Ed, not to bust your patunies, but Melonite (one "n") is not a FINISH but chemistry impregnated into the base metal and it goes down fairly deep. So even if you remove the bluing, the Melonite is still resident in the metal providing hardness and rust resistance.

To the Upper Himalayas from the Lower
Himalayas, thanx!

Now, if the owner has let the machine
lie around and 'something' of an unknown
nature has dripped on it and caused an
imperfection, that may be a real problem
to solve.

It is also good to hear that there is not a
RUST problem with the above HS2K as many
of them have had in the past.

Sorry Kraigster, but the HS's have Bruniral not Melonite... Your right about the melonite, but I don't believe any of the HS's have Melonite...

Ed, here in the Upper Himalayas we have much time to meditate and contemplate on the wonders of 21st Century metallurgical science. May peace be with you Grasshopper as you explore and wax poetic on the XD's proud lineage.

(I have no idea WTF I am talking about. "Pashtoom! Another margarita! On the double!")

I never said the HS's have/had Melonite. I am talking about current production XDs. You better move to the Upper Himalayas too. MTV has cluttered your mind. Hannng on Sloopy, Sloopy hang on.
