XD safeties, vs the Glock counterpart?
I presently own a XD9 Service and I am thinking of getting a XD40sc or a XD9sc soon. Today at the range I test fired a Glock .40 compact (not sure of the number, maybe a 37 or something). Anyway, I was pleasantly surprised that the Glock felt pretty good too. However, I read a few articles on the web about a few cases of accidental discharge by LEO when their coat string got caught in the trigger guard while holstering,. When they removed their coat later, the string pulled tight and dsicharged a bullet into their leg. Apparently this has happened more than once (once in Louisiana, once in Maryland, and once in some other place that I don't remember right now). There are probably other instances as well.
I have been really considering the XDsc, the Glock, and the M&P, which has a trigger safety similar to the Glock. I'm now thinking that maybe I will just stick with the XDsc. A locl dealer has one in OD and one in black for around $475. I would like any input you guys can give me regarding the safety mechanism on the XD, the Glock, and the M&P. Am I just being paranoid about the trigger safety? Todd |

Um...well in regards to the trigger safety only, all of the guns you mentioned would technically have the same issue. If something catches the trigger and disengages the trigger safety, the trigger will be ready to disengage the sear. However, the XD's grip safety would save your leg in this situation.
The grip safety is one of the major selling points for the XD line.

Mechanical safeties be damned.
The reason you choose the XD over the Glock is because the XD is not a sewing machine.

One other question I have for a Glock in .40. The have a known issue with not fully supporting the round in the chamber, which leads (theoretically) to a large number of documented KBs. Where as the XD has a fully supported chamber.
Is this an ongoing issue in Glocks? Or has this been corrected in their design?

It's easy to get into the habbit of at least releasing (engaging) the grip safety while holstering! It is a good idea, like you said. It would also be a good idea, I guess, to get into the habbit of doing a quick swipe with your fingers around the gun after it is seated to make sure that there are no strings or whatnot, hellbent on ruining your day, caught with the firearm in the holster.

The safety (or lack thereof) on glocks is a big reason i was inititally drawn to the glockish xd design. It's like a new and improved glock to me, with the reliability and simplicity still intact.

I have both, 4 actually, all XD's. In a previous lifetime I owned 2 glocks, the 17 and 23, I didn't like either of the glocks. They were lighter than the XD's and I felt more recoil (up and to the right). I guess I could have gotten used to it but just didn't like the glocks, I think I secretly hated being on a shooting range and all 23 other shooters were shooting glocks also.
My favorite is the 40SW service then the recently aquired XD SS subcompact. I'm carrying the sub all the time now, giving the 40 a rest. The sub is not a lightweight with the SS chamber, it is extremely accurate though, which suprised me. The only thing I could say that's wrong with it is during IDPA competitions I had one hell of a time knocking down those big steel plates at 50'. I was hitting COM but they still wouldn't go down. When I switched to the .40SW Service they went down with the first shot. |

The key safety the Glock does not have is a firing pin blocking safety that automatically resets when the slide moves out of battery after firing, which means an XD can not go full auto or double fire, but a Glock definitely can.
IMHO, the Glock's design using a bump on the trigger bar to lift the FP safety is dangerous, since it disconnects the safety when the trigger is pulled.... and it disconnects it every time the slide cycles back to battery, without a release and repull of the trigger.
