Probably silly question
I will be getting my XD9 soon. I wanted to make sure that I do the right thing before I take it out to the range. I assume that a filel strip, cleaning and function check would be necessary before shooting the XD. I have two 1911s and as far as I can tell that is what I should do. Did some searching on the forum and wasn't able to find the answer before I posted this question. Thnaks

An XD would be fine to go from the counter to the range as long as there is a bit of factory greese or oil visible. Always check the barrel and make sure it is clear. However, I think you should take it home first, field strip it, wash and scrub everything down with CLP (or equiv), wipe it dry, and oil it (lightly). It will probably bleed a little during your first shooting session, so bring a rag with you - but the CLP will help it wear in well and prevent problems, I'm sure. Search for "Cleaning" and you will find hundereds of opinions on what you should do. Almost all of them will be fine.

I field stripped mine. Didn't find any gunk. Went straight to the range. I never understood why people clean new guns other than being a "feel good" thing. It's already cleaner than I'll ever get it... ever.

I feild strip and function check every gun I acquire, but that is just me. In fairness, I have never found anything that would be a problem, but would hate to be looking down to where my fully functional hand used to be saying, "I guess I shouldn't have skipped the check this time."

Field strip and function check... yes. Check for the pistol being dry as a bone... absolutely. But clean a brand new gun? I wouldn't bother.
