my $0.02: I have a pre-melonite XD-40 and it rusts all the time. Just this past week I shot a USPSA match on Saturday and Sunday, put about 250-300 rounds through it. I got tied up at work and did not clean it until after practice on Wednesday evening. Where I had repeatedly grabbed the slide during the match was all rusty, The end of most of my pins have evidence of rust. Thing is if I wipe it down with oil and it comes right off. It's just surface rust. Not great but no big deal. It's not like the gun is going to quit working because of a little surface rust. Keep it oil and shoot it.
Personally I am sort off disappointed that mine does not look worst than it does. I don't want it to look abused but some good wear from hard use look good IMHO. I have over 10,000rds though mine now and its been in and out of a XD-gear holster a lot and still looks decent. I figure/hoped by this time it would show a lot more wear than it does. Yeah the old finish is not as good as the new finish but that said it's held up to some pretty harsh use by myself and with a light coat of RIG grease looks pretty good. Rambing mcb |

Springfield told me that it did not matter if you are the original owner as long as the weapon had their name on it, the warranty was lifetime. "Unknown if it's their lifetime or yours"
