A well placed 9mm group will be just as effective as a .40 and the ammo is cheaper. I have a XD 9 compact and my wife has the XD 9 sc and with both of us in the same caliber it's convenient.

When I was deciding which one to buy I heard a lot of the "shot placement" arguments...my OPINION is pretty simple if I am in the midst of a confrontation, I know I am going to be stressed, scared, nervous, whatever, and my shot placement WILL NOT be the same as if I was shooting at the range, so I went for the increased stopping power. The recoil on the .40sc is NOT bad. I like it, and I have let my wife and kids shoot it, and none of them have had trouble with it. Even my 10 year old boy. It jumps in his hands, but he can control it.
There is my 2 cents. Oh one other thing, my 15 year old daughter has asked me to get her a .40sc for "her" gun. She is about 5'2" 120 lbs. and a typical "girly" girl (her words not mine). So if she can handle the recoil I cant believe a man cant. The only LEGITIMATE argument for the 9mm is how cheap the ammo is. But if you are serious about protecting your family, and making sure they can protect themselves, I personally dont think that that is the area I want to save money. A little extra cost for ammo is worth a TON of secure feelings. Again, just my 2 cents worth.

I have/had all the XDs and Glocks you have mentioned.
In my experience the Glock can not come close to the XD (in 40) with regards to ease of shooting and recoil. Glocks, IMO, are best in 9. Others beat the pants off them in more powerful calibers. |

I wont trust a 9mm with MY LIFE (or my families), I will not use anything smaller than a .40 for CCW.
I do not believe the 9mm is a "bad" round, it's just not one I personally feel comfortable with Stopping someone. 9mm is GREAT for PLINKING!!! Price is much better than .40 or .45; but with a life on the line, I don't need a bargin, I need stopping power, and I personally don't see the 9mm as a good round for that purpose. Many many people like the 9mm for CCW, and for "them" it's good enough, I guess, just not for me. |

For some reason I love the 40 cal round much better than 9mm. I vote for the 40. I can get back on target much faster and the bark is worse than the bite.

I shoot my .40 just as well as my 9mm. Just because it's a .40 doesn't mean one will shoot it worse than a 9mm. Heck, I shoot my .45 better than my .40!

The discussion about 9mm versus 40S&W will go on for ever and it won't be resolved here. I have both the a 9SC and 45 Compact and have owned several 40s. You want a gun that is easy to carry and conceal while giving you adequate protection. Here's my $.02:
I have owned 4 40S&W in various lengths a personal I don't feel the ballistic gain is worth the snappy recoil and increased muzzle flip in the 40S&W. I personally find the 45ACP less annoying to shoot than the 40S&W so i'm a little bias XD9SC using 40mag = 12 in the mag 1 in the chamber 13 rounds in the gun. With 2 spare full size 16 round mags total 45 rounds available. If you use 40S&W full size mags you have over 50 rounds available. XD40SC 9 in the mag 1 in the chamber = 10 rounds in the gun. With 2 full size 12 round mags total 34 rounds available. XD45ACP Compact 10 in the mag 1 in the chamber = 11 rounds in the gun. With 2 full size 13 round mags total 37 rounds available. Another thing to consider is where you normally would carry the gun. The SC and Compact have nearly identical length grips and if you add a Pearce extension the SC is actually longer. The only place the 3" barrel has the advantage is if you carry anywhere forward on the front of your body because the 4" barrel can interfer when you are sitting. While standing the 4" conceals just as easily as the 3", but it is a little heavier. I'd just did the math. My carry guns is a XD9SC using 40S&W mags and a 45 Compact.

Have both, prefer the 9mm hands down. Don't get me wrong, I'm a big caliber guy, I have about 12 .45s, but the 9mm in compact is a whole different gun to me over the .40.
Most other guns, I find the .40 to only have simply a snappier recoil over the 9mm, but on the XD sub platform, I find the 9mm to be a different handling gun completely, much nicer to shoot. I will admit though, I've never been a .40 S&W fan, 9mm or .45 for me |
