Scarring top reloaded round in mag bad?

So. . . assume you go to the range twice a week and shoot a 100rd WWB. Then return home, clean gun, and load mag with your "defense" rounds. Eject Mag, replace the one stripped off the top. Reinsert mag. (Ending up with one round in chamber and full magazine.)

Those rounds (the two rounds that alternate between the "in chamber" and "top of magazine" positions) keep getting scarred.

Should I care?

How do you "practice with what you intend to use", and yet keep the mag/gun loaded with defensive rounds when you're at home, without reinserting/alternating the top two rounds and scarring them?

This is NOT a "does it hurt to keep the magazine loaded all the time" question. (There are plenty of posts on that, I believe the general opinion is. . . its the flexing of the spring, not the constant tension that kills it.)

And its NOT a "should I keep a round in the chamber" question. (Again, opinions vary, I'm going under the assumption that #1 you have to remember it needs to be cycled before use, and #2 may only have 1 or less seconds to do so, before an intruder is upon you.) So I'd "prefer" not to just insert the home defense magazine, and leave the chamber empty.

And its NOT a "should I shoot 2-3 rounds after cleaning to prove it'll fire when I need it". Though. . . that is starting to make more sense, but as its impractical, unless I clean onsite at the range, and in 22+ years I've never had a gun fail to fire due to assembly problems. . . I'll risk it. I'll #1 practice shoot, #2 clean at home, #3 load for defense (and hope it fires when needed.)

Ahhh, what's a person to do. . . just keep cycling those two top rounds in the "home defense magazine"?

Thanks,

jkh

I have heard occurences where the constant chambering/unchambering of a round can affect the OAL (over all length) of a cartridge, by pushing the bullet into the casing ever so slightly every time it is done.

This, in time, can be a very BAD thing. By decreasing case capacity (by filling it with the bullet a little more each time...) you increase pressure.

That can be bad....

Hope this helps.

dont just cycle the same two rounds. im sure you have more than enough rounds you can cycle through. if you still have some in the box cycle through those instead of unloading the mags and putting those two back at the bottom.

maybe about once a month I shoot off some of my .45 DPX that I carry with both to stay in practice with them and to make sure I have fresh bullets that I'm carrying with. The bullets are expensive but I'd rather buy a new box once every month or two than risk my life on a bullet thats been chambered and unloaded too many times.
