car carry in AZ

i go to school in a less than safe part of town.. and by less than safe i mean ive heard gun shots in the middle of the day in the surrounding 'neighborhood' (if it can be called that)..

i have been seriously contemplating carrying in my car (i dont park on campus.. so the firearm on school grounds argument does not hold) but how safe is it to carry ammunition in a couped up and often time inferno-like environment like a black car?

has anybody ever experienced, or had a situation with cooked off rounds due to heat? those of you that reside on this patch of sun scorched landscape know the kind of temperatures i am talking about.

i did a little test with an empty weapon when i was at a friends house, and after being holstered and in the glove compartment through the hottest part of the day, my xd was just shy of physically being to hot to hold. i am thinking this cannot be safe with ammunition.

thoughts anybody?

You will not get any rounds to cook off due to the heat built up in the car. I lived in Mesa for 16 years and now live just southeast of there. Yes it gets extremely hot in a car in july (up to +130*) but this amount of heat just is not enough to set off a round. There has been some talk of this around here lately, try searching for it for more info.

Cheers

+1. In all the instances I've read about where ammo cooked off, it was in a situation like a house or vehicle fire where it was exposed to very intense, direct heat--and even then it took a little while to get them to go. No worries, bro--even with our car-ovens here in da Valley you have more to worry about with stuff being stolen than cartridges popping off.

i will do some more research, but its reassuring to know that nobody has even heard of rounds going by sheer heat buildup from just sitting in the sun.

thanks for the quick responses!

I suspect that if heat cook off of ammo was an issue, our brothers in arms would have a lot more "friendly fire" in Iraq.

Most likely the ammo will never cook off even in our Arizona heat. But it will be degraded over time.

You should load up some good quality U.S. made ammo and cycle it out of your magazine once or twice a year minimum if you must store it in the car during the summer months. Also, keep your gun lubricated. It can/will loose most of its (summertime) lubrication rather quickly if stored in an Arizona car. I'd check it out weekly until you determine what interval is best, then relube as needed.

BTW, it's legal to have a firearm in one's car on school grounds here in Az. The firearm must be unloaded, out of sight, and the ammo/mag must be kept in a separate area.

Heck you should cycle it at least once a week and test it against about 100 or so fresh rounds.
