SOCOM use
Do you think that the XD would be a good special forces weapon? .45 5" would be great. The HK Mk. 23 is a great, accurate weapon, but it is really big. What our your thoughts?

Will it ever happen??? Most likely not. Something about the 'guvment' and their likeness of a slide mounted safety. Matt

I think that the XD-45 would be a fine weapon.... but......
Items missing when "stock" include: night/low vis sights, ambi slide release, lanyard loop, threaded barrel, adjustable backstrap (grip), might be more I'm missing. Some of the listed items are easy fixes or have drop in products already available, but the ambi slide release and adjustable backstrap will require more homework. IMHO, currently the S&W M&P .45 or the Beretta PX4 (if it comes out in .45) would be the leading candidates. Just ramblings from a drunken typist... carry on and as always, cheers.

The best SOCOM pistol is the one the operators choose. Let them pick their own pistols. If I was an Operator I would choose a high quality 1911 most likely a Wilson or a Nighthawk. If it had to have the ability to accept a suppressor, then I would get the newest HK 45.

Good point. If I was in special forces, I would use it!

SOCOM is a ginormous organization, and not all personnel are door kickers. In reality support personnel greatly outnumber the users. And there's even pilots, comm guys, JAGs etc. you've got to arm. Thus the need for a standardized pistol.
Yes, in an ideal world, pick your own weapon and ammo, but alas... it's the military. Cheers, and no, for the previously mentioned reasons, 1911 won't make it.

The US Govt says they don't. Personally owned weapons are not allowed. Now that does not mean that the govt issued items aren't modified to enhance an individuals skills/needs.
That being said, I have seen, HKs, 1911s, even a few Glocks...by and far the common standard is the M9. It is a tough and well built weapon when properly outfitted and cared for. Biggest reason troops say it sucks is they don't know how to shoot or maintain it. I have heard many times that a 9mm won't knock a man down but everytime I offer to shoot someon so they can prove me wrong they decline. |
