What am I doing wrong?

Today I got a chance to shoot a few shells. I have been battling the XD40SC and accurancy since I have gotten it. I hit low, a very consistent group, but not where I am aiming. I know my shots would be lethal but I want better. I like to hit my mark and not just within a 5" circle.

Today my uncle and I shot from about 35' and every shot I made was 4-5" below point of aim. My uncle just got the XD45 Service so we tried it out. I was hitting low with it as well, but not as bad as the SC, maybe 3-4". His grouping was not as tight but hitting the mark with either pistol. It definitely looks like me as the problem.

I have tried changing my grip, my stance, but nothing I have tried has cured it or changed it. I seem to hit the same no matter how I hold it. I am also holding the sights on center mass, I do not lollipop the target. I have about 350 rds through it so far. In past few weeks I have shot my P89 (9mm) and a 2" snub .357 and I am hitting well with those. I can nail a pop can repeatedly with the snubby from about 10 yards and it has a shorter barrel than my SC plus the groove for the rear sight. I have also shot a P226 the last time at the local range and I hit solid with it as well.

Any ideas, suggestions? As much as I like the XD if I can't hit with it I may have to consider getting something else. Or I may have to see shaving the sights or getting adjustable.

I had exactly the same results at first. My azimuth was perfect but my vertical was low consistenly. Turns out that without realizing it I was anticipating the recoil and pushing forward at the last second just as the sear broke pushing the shot low. Instructor had me do slow shooting drills repeating to myself, "front sight, steady press, steady press, steady press..." etc. May not be your problem though.

A very good drill for curing trigger flinch is to have the shooter hold the gun and place their finger on the trigger but not pull it. Let the firearms instructor place their finger over the students trigger and pull the trigger for them. They will get good hits and they will feel what the instructor means by pressing and not jerking the trigger.

Some of this, as has been mentioned, may be compensating for recoil. I used to have a similar problem with good groups. I was flinching the same way every time. Kinda strange.

This is the best Target Pistol Shot Analysis I have run across. FYI: It is in PDF format.

I have tried numerous things. I have shot 155 - 180 grain HP and solid ammo. I have played with my stance and grip. I have started just using my finger tip (first digit) for the trigger pull. I seem to shoot fine with the other pistols I have tried so that is why I am so puzzled. My XD and XD45 are bone stock.

I have also found several videos and self help targets, but I will definitely review the new links and see if I learn anything different.

Try having some load your mags for you, and have them hide a dummy round in there some where, and see how bad you flinch.
And after that go home and dry fire for about a week then go back to the range and see what happens.
