Side by side comparison of S&W M&P and XD?

I am just curious how these two compare. Anyone own or shot both? Thanks.

I hear lots of great things about the M&P... but the 45 version only holds 10 rounds

Fairly heavy trigger I hear. I wonder if it can be worked on like an XD.

Pilgrim, if you need more than 10 rounds, you don't need a higher-capacity gun, you need air support - assuming your gun is for personal/home defense.

I shot both at the range before I got my XD. May have just been a bad M&P but I didn't like the trigger on it - it seemed to click twice on the way out after a shot instead of just once so you'd think it had reset and go to fire again and nothing happened. It did this repeatedly to me.
However, I can say the rental M&P did seem slightly more accurate than the rental XD... but the XD felt better to me which is why I ended up with one.

Only problem I had with the rental XD was it didn't always lock the slide back after the last round was fired, that was probably my thumb though. Havn't had that problem with my personal XD.

The reason I asked was that I saw an M&P at the gun show today. I liked the feel of the grip very much but the overall detail of the gun looked a little rough. Price for the .40 Compact was around $480. Given the cost of US labor, I have to think something has to be cut to make it competitively priced with the Glock and XD but perhaps that's unfair.

I agree you shouldn't need more than ten rounds. But it's just fun. The truth is, in terms of function, alot of the modern polymer semi's are highly similar. 13 rounds in the XD is what seperates it from the pack.

But I only carry 10 rounds in my XD-45C. I better carry a second gun for backup.

I only carry 10 in my service to cut weight. But I still find myself with this burning desire to cram as many rounds in all my weapons as possible.... it keeps me up nights.... mmmmm.....bullets....lots and lots of bullets....*drifts off into daydream*

I'm currently issued an MP40 for work. It feels great in my hands, balanced and I can shoot it better than I can the XD. It's also a light recoiler. The trigger is fairly heavy but it smooths up a tad over time. It's got a shorter reset and overtravel than the XD. Not a big fan of the magazine safety, which prevents it from firing without a magazine.

Unfortunately I'm not confident in it's ability to go bang every time I pull the trigger. Because of that our agency is buying us all new Glocks instead. I'm fine with that.
