Bent Guide Rod Spring
I was cleaning my XD .45c getting all ready to make some of my first gun pr0n when I got a little concerned. (I actually already sent Rich an e-mail on this but I thought I would ask here too.)
I've already mentioned on this forum that I sent my XD off to Canyon Creek for a tungsten guide rod and carry trigger job. I absolutely love the trigger and cleaning a shiny piece of tungsten is much more fun than that dull assembly that Springfield ships out. Anyway... Rich sent me my XD with a 19# spring and had a 21# in the mail close behind. So I took my XD out to the range yesterday with the 19# and flawlessly put 100 rounds through it. I brought it home and cleaned it and went back out today for another 100 rounds. Tonight when I took it apart to clean it and took the spring out I noticed that it was bent. http://s156.photobucket.com/albums/t...t=DSCF0414.jpg I don't know what would cause this but I've never heard of it before. Is it something to worry about. Also, the 21# spring that came in the mail is an extremely tight fit on the guide rod. Should I not force it. It seems you dont normally want to force things. I haven't even put her back together yet. Help! |

The 21# spring will be tight until it cycles a bit. As for the bent spring, it won't hurt anything, as long as it straightens out when it is on the rod.

you could bend it back.. but then too much of that could lead to metal fatigue

Thanks. I behave the same way with my car. I'll fix something myself if I can...just as soon as I know EXACTLY what I'm doing and that it won't explode in the process.

A little tweak to a spring isn't so bad. Just remember to keep an eye on it incase it a crease in it. If it shows a small crease or bend replace it.

Ok I'm not going to start a new thread but I hope I get someones attention because I'm having some issues.
So I get the 21# spring on after an enormous effort. Afterwards I try to push the slide back so I can drop the assembly lever and be done. With the 21# spring on I cannot get the slide far enough back to catch. I can't take a picture of it because the effort it would require would be too much to operate the camera. One strange thing is how far out the cocking indicator sticks out after I try and move the slide back. So I disassemble it again and go to replace it witht he 19# spring so I can deal with it tomorrow. The slide will now move back to the catch but the cocked indicator hardly comes out at all. Also the spring seems to have no tension as I can move the slide a good quarter inch with seemingly no resistance. I'm going to take it apart and put it back together again but I am stumped. Again, Help! |
