Spring Poundage...

Recently got my pistol back from Canyon Creek. The trigger job is phenomenal as is the tungsten guide rod. I'll make a more lengthly post when I find the time.

I pestered Rich with e-mails all the while it was gone so I thought I 'd ask here and give him a break from me.

On my invoice he wrote down that all he had for the guide rod at the time was a 19# spring and that he would send me a 21# spring as soon as he had one for me.

All I want to know is what the difference is between the two.

Hardy Har...

Yeah I get that. But what effect am I going to see by having a 2# lighter spring? Would there be a reason that someone might want a 19# spring? According to Rich, and I am inferring this, the 19# is a stop-gap until I get the 21#. But obviously he wouldn't put a spring in there that would cause it to malfunction.

The spring weight he is talking about is, how much spring tention there is when the slide is all the way back.
The higher the spring weight is the harder it is to pull the slide back, and that is the simple answer.
I found that with the lighter springs, the stricker spring would pull the slide out of battery when I did a reload, so the 19# spring is going to be OK, but a 20 to 22# will be more reliable

Come to think of it I did have a piece of brass smack me in the face pretty hard at the range today.

Ok, so a heavier spring slows the slide down which lessens the effect of muzzle flip? Is that the only effect? I can see how you don't want to go too heavy as the slide won't be able to cycle a round past a certain tension.

There are +s, and -s with high or low spring weights.
I like a light spring in my STI (12.5#), and like a light spring in my XD (14#), but my XD will not work @100% untill I use a 20# or higher spring.

There are many interaction, the brass in the face is one indicator. When playing with light reloads in my first HS2K, the lighter loads came in closer to the body until they hit the head then dribbled off of the wrists then sometimes to the left of the wrists then stovepipes. Heavy springs and lighter springs mimicked the same results.

There are many springs in the pistol, and the grip and stance are only some. If the brass hits you in the face, with no other changes make a firmer grip and the brass will eject further.
