Just got a new XD9 Secivce Bi-tone
Now what? This is my first handgun. I grew up with long guns, and carried a glock on watch in the Navy, but never owned a handgun myself.
So, what else should I need when I got to pick it up in 8 to 10 days? (I hate Maryland) Cleaning kit? Secure storage? What else? I plain on shooting paper a good bit, and I would like to maybe check out IDPA shooting. |

Ammo. Lots and lots of ammo.
If you have an Academy Sports, get Monarch brand ammo. After that, Winchester White Box from WalMart is relatively inexpensive.

Your XD will not be as finicky about ammo as your Glock was, so don't be afraid to buy whatever ammo is least expensive to use for target practice. If you are using it for self-defense, pick up some good hollow-point ammo as well.

If you want to work with Computers, CTN... not IT DEMAND to get CTN! Don't back down.
If you want to play with the SEALS, or be a SEAL, or do some real cool SEAL like stuff, CTR. (Special Boats is even more fun!) CTI would be alright, a good but of overlap with a CTR plus the language, and bonus pay if your good. MA, Is that open to new recruits? It's been a wile, and it's one that changes a good bit. It's overmanned one year and you can't get rank, undermanned the next and your working like a dog. When I was in you had to be a E-5 in a source rate before becoming a Master at Arms. It's good work if you can get it. |

I was a CTR1 (SW/AW) when I got out. I got out because they wouldn't let me change to CTN since I was listed as "Mission Critical" on some piece of paper.
The big thing about the CTN rate, Vs. the IT rate is the Security Clearance. Having a Security Clearance pretty much means you will always have a job, and that job will pay 40 or 50% more than it would with out a clearance. Less sea duty too, if you go to sea, most of the time it will not be as a member of the ships crew. You will just show up, ride the boat/ship to the location, and do your thing. No watch standing, no working on the mess decks washing dishes and cleaning bathrooms. There are some draw backs to that, like not having a rack, or having a crappy rack with dripping pips over it, and the ships crew may give you a hard time as a "rider"... but it's not bad, and most of the time your behind the green door anyway. As a IT, you would build and work on computer networks, databases and maybe even do a little programing, as a CTN you will all of that, but also learn, for lack of a better term, active hacking and counter hacking. Not to mention cryptology... and how to break it. Any CT rate is going to have very rapid advancement, and high re-enlistment bonuses compared to the rest of the Navy. It's not uncommon to see CT's make E-7 in 10 or less. The only thing is I'm not sure if they opened CTN to recruits, I think so since I saw a 3rd class the other day that was a CTN... I haven't really been keeping up with the times... and most of my friends that where here when I got out have transferred. But if it's open, and if your like computers, it's by far the best rating in the Navy... Plus the training is at Corry station in Pensacola.... some hate it there, but Corry is my favorite base I have ever been to! |
