Took the wife shooting

So today i finally got to take my wife shooting for the first time. She has never fired a hangun before or a rifle for that matter. Wow was i suprised lets just say i wouldn't want her shooting at me. I had her shooting at 25 yards and she did very well, she was shooting my XD40 service. The only thing is she is a small girl and she said that her hands are too small. So now she wants to start shooting with me but she wants a more suitable handgun for her size. What about the new M&Ps that have the three different size palm swells. Any thoughts on that or any other ideas?

Julie Goloski has itty bitty hands and she shoots the M&P like nobody's business!

Not any more. She got picked up by S&W about a year ago. Cowboy shooter Randi Rodgers got picked up by Glock in Julie's absence.

I had a similar experience. I think that women tend to be better students because they don't have pre-conceived notions of how to do it. I've seen so many guys who are afraid to admit that they don't know proper shooting techniques.

When my wife and I were "courting", I took her to an indoor range in town here. She'd never shot before so I took an extended amount of time explaining gun safety and operation. When she got onto the range, she started with a Ruger 10/22 and then went on to a S&W .38, a G19 and, finally, a Gov't model. I explained that it had a little bit more recoil but that it wouldn't knock her on her butt (this isn't Hollywood).

After she went through her first mag, I suggested that she squeeze only her trigger finger and not her whole hand as her shots went low/left. When she emptied the next mag, she blew the center out of the bull then turned to me and said "Do you have any smaller targets?". Needless to say, she is now my wife. She is not a big person either 5'4" and 125 lbs. She didn't care for the double stack grip of the G19 but felt the grips were comfortable on the 1911.

Now, you just said that your wife did very well with the XD 40. Why not get the XD 9 and you can have 2 different guns to choose from when you go to the range. I'd recommend going to range that rents handguns and try several out. That's the best way to get an idea of what will fit her hand.

I do have a XD9 service but i thought it was in my case when i left but if wasn't it was in the gun safe. Actually she shot a few rounds out of my 1911 GI first but she didn't care for that as much as the XD.

being a female myself with smaller-ish hands, i held a kahr cw9 this past week and it felt like a really good size due to the single stack mag i assume. i'm still sticking with my XDs though.

25 yards? Give her a better chance for success, move in to pistol range.

25 yards is a good pistol range. But I agree start her at 7.

Heck I practice at 50 and even 100 yards occaisionally. Not all pistol fights are at 7 yards.
