Wwb Jhp?
Just wanted some opinions on WWB JHP in 9mm 115 grain and 40mm 180 grain. Is this ammo an adequate round for self defence?

i bought the 100rnd of wwb 115gr for 19.xx.
i also bought 20rnds of sxt's 147gr for 16.xx i shot 10rnds of the sxt's and were amazing. fed great shot great. i only shot around 30 of the wwb JHP's, which also fed and shot great. i planned and currently have my two main HD mags with the first five rounds being the sxt's and followed by the wwb jhp's. my two other mags have the wwb jhp's. so at the range thats what i tested. i shot a mag with sxt's first and the wwb.

if it feeds reliably from your XD (which it should), then you're doing fine. I'd just make sure you get a couple hundred rounds through the XD without a hiccup before using it as your SD round.

I recall seeing 9mm JHP tests for both the WWB (USA9JHP) and Remington ammo they have at Wal-Mart. I can't remember specific data, but I do remember them doing pretty well, and even comparable/better than some expensive brands. The expansion may not be as consistently dramatic as some of the top-shelf defensive ammo, but there is a lot to be said for practicing regularly with the ammo that you are going to carry.
There are some other excellent choices that won't bust the budget, such as the impressive Federal 9HST_ (1,2,or 3). Those are $20 for 50, but far more difficult to get your hands on than the WWB stuff. Another choice is Black Hills (M9N8 or M9N9). They have a very good reputation, although I don't think I've ever seen a phonebook or water jug test, and cost about 23 for 50. |

Here is a link to the expansion results of a wet phonebook test, including the WWB (USA9JHP) in 124 and 147 available at Wal-Mart.

My .40 likes then better than Speer
In my case, my .40 likes the WWB better than the Speer 180 gr Gold Dots. I think my feed ramp is a bit touchy, so it likes the more rounded Winchester JHP better than the Speer, which are not radiused as much.
My completely unscientific comparison between the two gave a ~20% failure to feed with the Speers. Only one limp-wristed failure with several hundred rounds of Winchesters. To make a short story long...if it goes bang, and downrange, it's a lot more effective than if it stays partly fed into the chamber. |
