Polishing the barrel question.......
Sorry if this has been beat to death, but I can polish the barrel on my gun? I was thinking of sanding it down with 1000, 1200, 1500, then 2000. Then polishing it with a wheel and compound. When Im doing this, I'm not removing the melonite am I? Will it still inhibit rust if the coating is all polished off?
EDIT: Just did some searching around, seems that this wont remove the melonite. And if I keep it oiled I shouldnt have problems. Correct?

I just polished my barrel tonight as a matter of fact=my advice, get a Dremel. I went from Melonite to mirror finish in 2.5 hours. It would have taken me at least twice as long, and I stress at least, without using the Dremel. They have a kit for it at Home Depot that has all the attachments for polishing specifically for $11.00. It saved me alot of trouble.

I've had mine polished for probably 6 months now, not rust. Mine is pre-melonite but I do use militec on it.
I did mine by hand. Used 1500 grit and then hand polished it using Mother's Mag Polish.

I just did mine. Wet sanded it with 3m 1000, 1200, 1500, 2000 BY HAND! Then polished it using a buffing wheel, and 3m heavy grit polish, then 3m purple mirror glaze. And it looks........ like ....... a mirror. Will post pics when I get home. I took me 45 mins.

Yes it will remove any treatment to the metal. If you polish until you see bare metal then you will be be exposing the bare metal to the the elements which will cause rust if not kept lubed. If you remove metal off of the muzzle unevenly then you will allso cuase accuracy problems. The area where the muzzle and rifling meet and the bullet exit the barrel has to be left even or accuracy will suffer.

I sanded the end down with a flat block, just enough to remove the coating. I'm sure it will be just fine. Anyways heres the pics: ![]()

Did you polish it over a Glock catalog?

Jack won't like you for doing that on his time JX, last time we went to the range I don't think I had my 40 barrel in the pistol but I did mine about a year ago and no probs yet, I also have one that I polished the slide on to a bright mirror finish using the buffing wheel and jewelers rouge, I will show you next time we go to the range.
