XD45 / G19...side-by-side?

At the risk of being abused in my first thread on this forum with repeated "Use the search button" responses...

I have a G19 an am considering the compact XD45 as a replacement. The G19 is about the largest gun I can effectively CCW while maintaining a respectable dress-code (i.e. no huge Hawaiian shirts). Would someone kindly either provide images or point me to a thread with images comparing the XD45 to the G19/23/32? I'm at work right now and I don't have the liberty of surfing threads for any real length o time. I've seen one thread but the guns weren't set side-to-side.

Anyone that wants to add tidbits comparing the two guns is welcome and appreciated but I can search for that at a later date if need be. I'm considering the XD over the Glock as I'm starting to prefer the grip of the XD. I've shot an XD-9 subcompact and an XD-40 Tactical and I liked them both. The XD-45 looks like it's going to be the perfect size to replace the G19.

Thanks in advance - I appreciate it.

First off welcome to the forum. I think this site is a wealth of information, some biased, most unbiased. The two guns you're talking about are different calibers. the G19 is a 9 x 19 para, while the XD 45 is just that, a .45. A better comparison would be the G21 (full size), G30 (subcompact), or the G36 which is subcompact slimline (single stack mag). A better apples to apples comparison would be the xd-9 (4 in. barrel) service to the G19. And for even smaller dimensions, the xd-9sc (sub-compact) has a three in barrrel with a small 10 rd mag for easy concealment and a full size mag for range trips or just when you need that extra few shots.

I was originally in the market for a 9mm and was going primarliy for a G19, but my friend that works that the local gun store showed me the xd's and it was pretty much over at that point. I like the overall feel of it, from racking the slide back and fiddling with it, the xd just felt more solid. much more commfortable to hold too. After getting my xd i rented the G19 to see what I was missing. To me the polygonal bore caused a more felt recoil then my xd. I don't have any picks and I tried google, but to no avail. If you have any more questions I will be happy to answer them. Other good alternatives are, Sig Saur, HK, or FN's FNP. I have a Sig P225 and I love it, you can find police trade in ones for about $370 + great shooting 9mm, and very comfy to hold and shoot.

Thanks for replying. I have some time now to surf so I took the raw numbers from Glock's and Springfield's websites. Here the are:

............G19.......XD45 Compact (4")
...........----...... -------------------
Height....5"...........5"
Length...6.85".......7.3"
Weight.. 21oz....... 29oz

Same height, which was the kicker. Now I just need to go test-drive an XD45 and see how it feels to me compared to the Glock lineup.

Whoops - looks like we were posting at the same time. Thanks for the reply and I appreciate the feedback.

I'm considering the XD lineup because the XD seems to feel better in my hand than the Glocks do. Two-handed shooting alleviates most of that with the Glock but one-handed...the gun just doesn't seem to want to fit my hand (or perhaps my hand doesn't want to fit the gun). After ergonomics comes concealability, and the full-size XDs are a tad too tall for me to effectively CCW in the Summer. The sub-compacts though just feel a little too compact. The XD-45 Compact seems to have bridged that gap and looks like it provides the same dimensions as the G19/23, which is perfect to me.

Moving from 9mm to .45 isn't a concern as I wanted to try another caliber as well. I had a G23 prior to the G19 and I liked the .40S&W round. If the XD-40 came in the same size as the XD-45 I'd probably consider it instead.

Thanks again - I'm looking foward to trying out a few more XDs when I can. My next goal is to find a few XD owners in my area who might be willing to let me spring for ammo to try'em out. The only indoor range of which I know that rents Springfields is quite a drive from my house.

I just had my 4" XD45 and my Glock 22 out this evening and was comparing them side by side. Of course the G22/G17 is slightly larger than the G23/19 in length of slide and length of butt by around 1/2" or so.
Surprisingly the XD45 and the G22 were virtually IDENTICAL in size including the size of the grip - something you can't say about the G21 .45 ACP.
IMO this makes the XD45 a VERY attractive handgun. 13 rds. of .45 ACP in the same size parameters as a 9mm G17 and only a touch larger than a G19. The difference isn't going to make hardly any difference in concealed carry - where neither size is as easy to conceal as the various XD or Glock subcompacts. I say move to the XD45!

Well, I fondled an XD-45 Compact over the weekend and it looks to be identical in size to the G38. It felt a tad-bit top-heavy compared to the Glocks I'm used to shooting but I liked it. I have to say, though, that the clear winner of the ergonomics contest in my hand was the full-sized Smith & Wesson MP40. That thing felt like butter and it pointed naturally. The stock trigger was awfully rough but I'm sure there's a trigger job that can be done if it doesn't break in to a smoother pull (the XD by contrast is very smooth right out of the box).

After thinking it over more I'm going to hang onto the G19 and eventually pick up a second pistol, which may be the XD-45, the Tactical XD-40, or the MP40. Nothing against Glock but the only one I like from their lineup is the G19 I have.
