Slide wont stay open on empty mag in new XD9
Hi Everyone
A friend of mine recently picked up his first handgun, an XD 9. He fired it the first time about 150 rounds, it worked great and he was in love. Dis assembled and cleaned his gun and put it away. Later that week he took it to the range again and it would not lock open with an empty magazine in it. He still fired it a bit but it would never stay open on the empty magazine. Did he do something when he cleaned the gun? Hes going to bring it over sometime next week for me to have a look at, any tips what I can look for? Thank You |

"how" disassembled?
I just remove the slide, pop the spring out and remove the barrel from the slide, clean and oil. |

Dose it happen with all mags?
If it dose then it's something with the gun, if not check the mags. The slide stop might be dirty, but after 150 rounds, unless it's real crappy ammo it shouldn't be that dirty. So the only two things it could be are the mags, or the slide stop. |

^^^ Yea. Anything more than that should be left for someone who knows the weapon very well.

One more thing, if it is under powered ammo, the slide might not be comming back far enough to catch the slide stop.

True. I've always used winchester white box for range plinking. My one day using a 100 box of cheap, unpolished reloads resulted in 3 rounds not firing after being struck and one casing getting jammed in the slide after being fired.
... that stuff was pure garbage.

Wouldn't removing the slide from the frame and removing the barrel fromt he slide qualify as dissasembly? This problem did happen with both his magazines and he tells me he cleaned it well before firing it both times. Thank you for all the suggestions guys. I will give it look when he brings it over next week but sounds like I will probably suggest he contact Springfield or a local gunsmith if he prefers. I just hope he doesent get soured on springfields as this is his first handgun. Thanks for all the help. By the way, heres a pic of my XD 357.

have him check his grip. riding the slide stop lever is VERY common for new XD shooters.
a thumbs forward grip definitely helps, and lends itself to a strong XD/1911 grip. I usually point people at this video: http://www.oregonshooting.com/vids/spgrip1.wmv |

if it's not the mag/slide catch or a combination, it's probably the ammo or new recoil spring being overpowered or not being broken in yet.
Even when the mag/mag catch or both are dirty, they tend to still work...pretty simple components. I've had this happen with many different guns and it's never the mag/mag catch lever....usually just a tough spring/guide rod assembly and range quality ammo (even white box). Never happens with hot rounds and never happens consistently. |
