Shipping Firearms (Ship Smart & Save)

I'm all about saving money just about any way I can. From drawing my own targets on pieces of cut up boxes acquired by raiding recycle bins, to begging for 1 snap cap so I can put $10 into my ammo money jar. Eventually I want to get a new finish and maybe a trigger job, but the shipping is frickin rediculous!!!

It seems everyone here are of the same opinion on shipping, but something was just telling me that there had to be more options for shipping a firearm besides being raped by FedEx's overnight delivery. Well guess what...the laws, regulations, and policies aren't quite as strict as you think.

THIS is the article I've been looking for. Take a look and see what you think...

Ship it though an FFL and it does not have to go overnight. FFL to FFL can ship it standard USPS. My local FFL shipped a pistol for me for $30. He took care of packaging it and everything. I was pretty pleased I didn't have to pay overnight shipping charges.

Sweet! I use old pizza boxes from dominos or wherever I get pizza from. I draw targets on the back!

And old piece of sheetrock also works well too. You can reuse it more times than a piece of cardboard!

It may be the law, but good luck trying to get them to ship in state. UPS only makes you use overnight because their theft rafts were so high.

When I shipped my XD from Maine to IL for repair, it cost almost $60 for FedEX priority overnight shipping!!! The regular overnight was about $50. Luckily, SA will reimburse you up to $50 if the repair is covered by the warranty.

Smitty, for 20 dollars more, you can have your gun shipped OVERNIGHT from the East Coast to the West Coast by FedEx - extremely reliable, extremely safe. That is not a big difference as far as I'm concerned considering it arrives within 24 hours and it's FedEx vs. USPS (enough said). Plus shipping it yourself, there is no connection to your gun store which is not a bad thing either.

20 bucks Smitty and your gunsmith has it the next day and that's assuming it has to go 3,000 miles. I can't even buy a decent tie for 20 bucks. A no brainer for me.

I want to personally see my package handed over to the shipper, I want to be able to track it every step of the way, and I want to know immediately that it has been received. There is something to be said for peace of mind when it comes to giving up control of a firearm - the price we pay (literally and unfortunately) for the right to own. Frankly, shpping firearms is a last resort for me. I hate doing it.

I see your point. In my case I was selling the gun and shipping it to the buyers FFL, who said he wouldn't accept a gun shipped from a non-FFL. So I was kinda stuck doing FFL to FFL anyhow. If I were sending it my own gun for service or for gunsmith work, I'd do overnight just to make sure I got it back as soon as possible.

I was just trying to let the guy know his options.
