I thought that I read somewhere on this site that the sights are meant to be pressed out in a specific direction. Am I correct? If so, wich way should I punch them out?

Not for the faint of hearted i might add.
Which way do you drive the sights to punch them out?

left to right?

I'm in the same boat wanting to put in TFOs and doing the install myself. Is it "left to right" when removing and "right to left" when installing?

according to the Dissasembly dvd i have its Left to Right to remove them.
he suggests using a wood dowl to knock them out, but from what i've seen on the forum... it may take more than wood to knock em out.

cheers

Left to right to remove. Left to right to install. I put a drop of gun oil on the dovetail groove to help reduce friction and protect the finish.

You'll also need a vice, brass punch, and a hammer. I used two 1" thick strips of cherry wood on each side of the slide between it and the vice to prevent damage.

I'm going to warn everyone right from the beginning though... the initial first strike to get the sights (most notibly the front sight) unstuck from their very very tight factory setting takes a lot of force and in my opinion, not for the faint of heart. Even though I did a perfect job with no scratches to the finish of the slide or broken TFO's..... I highly recommend that either a smith do this job or those of you who know what you're getting yourself into.

How can it possibly be the same direction to remove as reinstall? It should be reversed for installation, should it not?

Agreed, if you install the same direction as removing, then to me (as a mechanical engineer) would mean it doesn't matter which direction you remove or install.

Don't feel bad..... on my Beretta 92, I put the slide in a vise and started pounding on the rear sight. I ended up using a steel flat tip punch and alarge hammer....

SIGHT NEVER MOVED.

I beat it so hard that the left edge of the sight ended up twice as tall as the right edge.

I found a gunsmith with a press he said would work..... he sure gave me a dirty look when I came back to get the slide. I suspect he really earned that $20.
