Question 4 Wheeling with XD

Okay... So I already know the answer to this, and I'm not particularly worried. But my father (a revolver guy) expressed some concern, so I just wanna make sure none of you guys think I should worry.

I routinely ride a fourwheeler with my 45service in a pancake holster with Chamber Loaded. I ride very fast and very rough, and it makes for quite a "jarring" ride. Is there even a remote risk of an AD do to an impact or jar causing the sear to slip? Or any other internal failure?

I told Dad the inherent risks of four wheeling should be of far greater concern to him than that of weapon malfunction. What do you guys think?

A pistol designed for war better survive some off road driving. I doubt racing across the Balkans in a T-80 would be a whole lot smoother.

Enjoying my XD .45ACP Tactical. need to break in my 870, and my wife's XDSC9.

I carry my XD45 ACP Tactical, in a SuperTuck from CB. Very comfortable, easy to hide, easy to draw, and easy to reholster.

Looking for an HDR*, either an AR-180B, or Kel-Tec FBR.

HDR, Homeland Defense Rifle

I ride my Honda TRX 450 alot, carrying several different pistols and don't really worry about an AD.

Admittedly, alot of the time I ride with an empty chamber and full mag, but I carry my 1973 Colt Combat Commander cocked and locked with a round in the chamber many times. Ditto for my 1977 SIG P220 Euro with a round in the chamber. Again, if these old buggers will do it without cooking off, you should have no troubles with the XD.

BTW, I have carried my XD-40 Service with a round in the chamber in a DeSantis Speed Scabbard while riding and was not one bit worried about it going off.

OK..I'll play the devil's advocate.....It's a manmade piece of equipment that can fail like any other manmade piece of equipment.

SOunds like you already know your answer....but, if you're riding why not carry without round chambered just to take 'Murphey' out of the equation? What is your perceived threat while riding fast and rough that requires a loaded chamber?

Let the flames begin!

rather than sacrificing your "speed of engagement" by not carrying a round chambered, why don't you check the functions of your pistol, ensuring they are working properly. the xd has a "drop safety" design, which i assume would work for bouncing as well...there is a thread about how to ensure that it is working properly. check it, and ride with confidence. i ride dirtbike and carry without concern.

eta: i'd be more concerned about the pistol bouncing out and me not noticing. when i ride, i have my pistol in a don hume clip-on, safely zipped up in my bag. i guess that ruins my "speed of engagement" argument, huh? haha...

I have dropped mine once, hard, on concrete. from a distance of about 5 feet while running. No problem and the scratch buffed almost all the way off with some silicon and a rough cloth. I was really glad the xd doesn't have plastic sights that day.

look really close at the firing pin safety. Take it apart and detail strip the slide once every couple months. then you can inspect the spring that holds the firing pin safety in place and verify no dirt. as long as the spring is in good shape and the hole is not fouled or gritty it will work as advertised.

I think it's ok as long as you are not riding with scissors....

toss your loaded XD up in the air about 30 feet a few dozen times. Its made to not discharge even if the sear is dropped but the safeties are engaged. trust me i tested this. i loaded an empty 9mm case with just a primer (no bullet or powder) dropped the sear without pulling the trigger and nothing happened. trust me the striker safety works. oops this is HTOWN stunna not agalindo lol.

I ride my 4 wheeler with my XD, and do not think about it except to make sure it is still in the holster.
I work on cars, trucks, and repair work around the house, crawling under them on them, and other than being a little uncomfortable when I am laying on it, I do not worry about it.
The holster I use covers the trigger, and has a strap over the slide to keep it in the holster.

Have you showed your Dad how the safety functions work on the XD?
