XD Rails - one notch or two?

I've seen photos of 4" XD's in which the rails look to have just one notch, and others that have two notches. I'm picking one up tomorrow, and was curious if there's actually a difference, or if the photos just didn't show properly.

If I remember right....

Back when the XD was the HS2000 it only had one notch in the rail. They have since put the second one on. I don't know when they started it though.

Which notches are you referring to? Here is a photo which unfortunately isn't the best since i took it with a flash in a dark room with my Digital Rebel XT. (the more I learn about this handgun, the better). It's a 4" XD-9mm with custom Canyon Creek Rod and #22 spring. I purchased the pistol 2 years ago.

Please excse the greasy and grimey condition. I had over-lubed the gun after installing the new TFO sights and Tungsten guide rod. Its a real mess right now after 200 rounds of Winchester White Box.... Cleaning tomorrow!

My guess is he is talking about the light rail (picatinny).

Oh.... the rails for accessories?

Like this?

Oh... and please once again my pathetic excuse for a magazine. Damned commie-pinkos up in Sacramento banned anything over 10 rounds a few years back.

One of my buddies has an XD that he bought in the middle of 05 (I think), it only has one notch in the rail. I got mine about 3 months ago and it has 2

Also like his hi cap mag holds 15 and mine holds 16. So maybe its a production date thing.

I believe the new ones have 2. Mine only has one. See manufacturing date below.

Oh, I also originally had the SA XML accessory light. It was not designed for the one notched service. When properly fitted, the on/off switch was too far away from my fingers. I had to sell it and buy the longer TLR-1. I think the XML light was originally designed to fit the sub-compacts, but the service and tacticals were later modified so that they could accept these lights also (and so that SA could sell more XMLs).

I just got a file out and filed another groove in my rail. Took about 10 minutes start to finish. I put my X2L on there, marked with a pencil where the groove should be, and started filing. Lots of black plastic powder later, it was as deep as it would go. The only problem was that the plate with the serial number was there, so I had to be careful to not go too deep and start filing into the plate.

It must be a production date thing. I can't remember when mine was made, but I bought it over a year ago, and it was used then.

Why not go with a 1913 rail?
