Well guys.... after plenty of reading on how to get these sights off and my new TRUGLO TFO's installed.... i decided to do it myself. I put a piece of very thin cloth around my slide and on each side a 1/2" thick 4" long piece of cherry wood (I use it for smoking and BBQ... simply delicious) and put it in my vice.
I used a steel punch with a cleaning patch over the end to prevent scratches to anything if i missed, and after a mild hit.... then a pretty solid hit, the front sight started sliding. I then just continued to mildly tap it out till it fell to the floor. I did the reverse of this to get the new TFO front sight into place but without any serious hamer hits. Just taps. The rear sight was very easy to take out. Only a small hit with the hammer on the punch and it came lose enough to just tap it out. Install was also quite easy. Now i'm fiending to go to the range. Now only do I have new sights, but a Canyon Creek Tungston Guide Rod w/#22 spring! I'm going to hit up Walmart tomorrow and pickup a few 100 round boxes of Winchester White Box. Only $13.99 each! (the only thing i'll ever buy at walmart) Here are some photos. ![]() ![]() ![]()

I was a little leery of installing TFO on an XD (do to the front site being pretty snugly fit). I did install them on a Glock 26 with no problems. I used a leather belt to brace the slide in the vice. Pretty much the same technique as you.
Nice job!

I added a drop of gun oil into the mix as well to help lubricate the sights as they were taken out and the new ones installed. You just can't be shy with the initial hit of the hammer. make sure its angled as to not gouge the sight into the metal on the top of the slide.

You da man, Andrew! Based on all the horror stories I've heard I wimped out and let a gunsmith install mine. I look forward to seeing your range report.

Yeah I paid $15 to have mine installed. I was too chicken to mess-up a new slide. Good job!
