Get snap caps. Dry firing without them can cause damage to firing pins.

There is nothing wrong with dry firing the XD. The only damage that will happen is the roll pin that retains the firing pin/striker will break over time. I have dry fired my XD40 over 50,000 times. I have dry fired my XD9tac over 25,000 times. I have only broken one roll pin and that was because I removed it improperly.

The concern with many guns is that you could damage the actual firing pin. That isn't the case with an XD. There is a small chance that you could damage the retaining (roll) pin that holds the firing pin in place, especially if it is damaged when removing/reinserting it during a slide disassembly. There are lots of people who have been dry firing their XDs with no ill effects. My feeling is that damaging it during a slide dissassembly is the bigger concern. Fortunately, the retaining pin in question is available for 1.00 at the store below when they reopen at the end of March. If you plan to dry fire a lot, and also disassemble the slide every few thousand rounds for inspection/cleaning, simply buy a handful and replace them when you reassemble the slide. "Problem" solved. http://www.xd-hs2000.com/

Per other post: Snap caps.
I picked up a 6-pack for a couple of bucks over at Nuckol's in Staunton. I also use them when teaching a couple of my friends to load and chamber my XD. "What's going to happen if I pull this trigger?" "Nothing?" *thunk of metal on plastic* "You just put a hole in my wall." Excellent training and practice aid. |

Mmm, someone remind me, and I'll call over to my usual place, and find out exactly how much they are. They probably WERE suprisingly expensive, but I've been running 26 hour days lately.
