Simplify?

Why does th XD have a firingpin retaining pin? Should'nt it
be able to float free? Great new toy though. Although I'm
still hesitant to leave one in the the pipe. Any tactical junkies
with realworld experience? Thanks for the info.

Good question. My take on the retaining pin is to give you something to replace when it breaks.

You do not want a free floatign pin as that makes it a safety issue. Look at the AR-15, it has free floating safety pin, there are documented cases of it going of when the round is chambered by the pin free floating into the primer due to inertia. It is rare but can happen. Also if the pin gets stuck due to lack of maintenance/heavy use and protrudes into the chamber. AKs and SKS have been known to fire this way too.

The XD has two springs acting in opposite directions, the firing pin dampening spring to keep the firing pin out of the chamber, there by reducing possiblility of inertial firing, the firing pin spring to drive the firing pin into the primer. The firing pin retaining pin keeps it from getting lost during disassembly as removal is a two step process.
