Concealed carry question, unholstering in public.
This has sparked my interest due to a recent thread on glocktalk about the cops being called for drivethru employees seeing a man in his car unholster his weapon.
I have had my concealed permit for a year or so and carry whenever possible. Sometimes there are times that demand me to take off my weapon before entering certain places. The other day I had to stop at the post office and as far as i know it is off limits to ccw. So I had to take my xd out of my iwb and place it into my lockbox which is bolted to the floor under my seat while sitting in the car. My rear windows are tinted not the front ones per wonderful PA state law. So how do you guys go about unholstering when in a public place like sitting in your car outside a post office. The post office was in a busy part of town and there is no side street parking. So i had to park at a meter in front with people walking by. Please only answer this if you have your ccw.

Pretty much what you've been doing, just unholster as discreetly as possible. Most people are amazingly unobservant and you could be changing clothes inside your car without them noticing.

Sucks when people call the law on you for OBEYING the law. Until mid March we have to carry in plain site while in or on a motor vehicle. You do get some funny looks when other motorists higher than you notice. One time I rode on the bike open carry and got some funny looks.

Very few people notice anything going on around them. However, a newspaper or spare jacket can be used to shield your acticities from outside view. I hold newspaper in left hand, covering view of my right hand removing pistol from strong side (right) IWB holster. Then use paper to wrap pistol while moving it to glove box, console, of under seat storage box. This is an extreme use, only when in a very busy area, lots of pedestrians walking right next to car.

I just try to time it when no one is close or looking, and be discrete. I don't know what else to do.

I carry almost 24/7. In fact, I carry around the house. When I'm out and about I ALWAYS carry OWB. I go into banks open carrying, stand in line and do my business and leave. Winter time makes it more convenient as my jacket covers it up. But in the summer I don't ave that luxury so I carry open.
When I have to go into a place that absolutely doesn't allow firearms I simply don't go into them. ![]() |

Well, I drive a truck, so that helps. Also, I tend to wear an ankle holster anymore. It's just easier both for unholstering and everyday wear. Tucked in shirts are easier etc. My best bet would be carry a smaller gun when you're gonna have to do that. It's easier to just hold it in the palm of your hand and conceal it while you put it under the seat or in the console etc.

You can always unholster in a less obvious place. Like pull into a mall parking lot where you can do your thing without anyone in your immediate vicinity.
