I went steel target shooting
On Sunday, I drove up the hill to a local range for their steel target shoot. It was pretty informal, just like I like things. I'd never shot steel targets before and I had a lot of fun.
There are 5, 6 1/2 inch discs and the distance is 7 yards. The discs are hinged at the bottom. You shoot two on the left, skip the middle, shoot two on the right and then the middle. You start with the gun holstered and draw at the buzzer. I had to have someone tap me on the shoulder because I couldn't hear the buzzer. I'll have to buy one of the electronic hearing protectors. It is a timed event and doesn't keep track of shots fired. Is this kind of a standard set-up? IOW, do they do this same kind of shooting at other places? Kind of an "industry standard" so to speak? I didn't do too bad considering it was my first time and I've only put just over 100 rounds through my XD40 SC. The only problem I had was two FTF's. The problem was that I didn't get the mag locked in. With the slide forward and using the Pierce mag extender, it is very difficult to get the mag to lock in. The mag slipped down after a few shots resulting in a mis-feed. From now on, I will insert the loaded mag with the slide back. I also borrowed a not-too-well-fitting holster as I still haven't received the holster and mag from S.A. The other problem I had was I was on the tail end of the "cold from hell" and wasn't feeling quite "up to snuff". I went home as soon as I was eleminated because I felt so bad. Anyway, it was great fun and I plan to do it some more. I just need to get out there and practice. WyoBob

The range I belong to does shoot steel shilouttes but not discs, pretty much a whole different format.
The closet thing we have to your discs is bowling pins. You set uo five bowling pins on the front edge of a 3 foot deep table. You are limited to 7 rounds per magazine. The idea is to knock the pins off the table (not just knock them down), if you knock them down you have to keep shooting untill they are off the table. We shoot head to head single elimination brackets. Other clubs do the timed format. We also shoot king of the hill where you can use any gun you want and no limit on mag capacity. The pins are set on the back edge of the table in this game and whoever clears the table first stays. The wrinkle is the guy who stays gets another pin added and the longer he stays the more pins are added to his line until somebody beats him. |

Our range has a TON of steel, even a night dedicated to just steel shooting where we get 80 to 120 shooters. Steel shoots are alot of fun and you can usually compete in two classes with two different guns.

Sounds like plate league we have here on Wednesday nights. Our targets are 8" hinged steel plates at 12 yards or so. You get 6 shots per magazine to make it even with wheel gun heros, can shoot as many guns as you want. I usualy shoot 3 guns, sometimes go up to 4 guns. You first shoot 4 timed trials for each weapon and the best three are averaged. From this they set up elimination tree based on time scores. After that it direct head to head competition with direct elimination, you do get to lose twice though. I am slowly getting proficient and have managed to win once when our IPSC shooter was away. That guy is brutal, with iron sights he manages to get 2 second or less times. My best so far is 3.51 seconds, usualy run in the 4.8 second group.

Isn't it fun?
We have several steel plate targets that we have set up at my Dads ranch and shoot everything from 22lrs to the SKS on them. Big fun. I love the satisfying "claaanng!" from hitting the steel deer target from 50-100yds with the SKS. Hey, you know when you hit and miss...right away! -Brickboy240

That really does sound like fun! I have never tried it though. I have seen steel targets mounted on a hinge before, but kind of thought it would be a bad idea.. doesn't the round ricochet?

Yeah the range at my gun club has 5 or so IPSC bays and one of them has hinged steel plates and one has stationary metal silhouettes. It's a lot of fun. I may start shooting IPSC.

I don't think they care for steel targets out at my range not that it would matter your usually there by yourself. But I was thinking of maybe building a PVC system with replaceable targets.
