Re-Chambering the same round...

I carry my XD-9 Service. I carry with a round in the chamber, but at night I take the round out and re-stack it into the mag. I live with 5 house mates and don't want a hot gun around the house unless it's on my hip. When I put the gun back on me, I rechamber the same round that I had just re-stacked into the mag the night before.

Question: Does rechambering the same round over and over again affect its performance or take it out of spec somehow over time?

Thanks,
GFunk

It might set the bullet back into the case after afew rechamberings. You might want to set it next to a new round and see if it's gotten any shorter.

Yeah...it can cause an issue but usually does not. Like ag said check to see if the bullet has slid back into the case.

You can be a little more on the gentle side when chambering the round as well and may will help vs. slamming the round full tilt into the chamber.

You can also vary which round you are re-chambering. I.E. flip the bullet you have re-chambered several times to the bottom of the mag and repeat when nec.

Hope this helps.

I used to do the same thing years ago. I got in the habbit of rotating rounds after I found a very noticably short round.

It depends on the ammo you are using but, rechambering a few times shouldn't be a issue. Just keep a close eye on it.

yep it will eventually cause the bullet to seat further back in the case. THIS WILL RAISE CHAMBER PRESSURES AND COULD CAUSE A CASE FAILURE OR IN RARE CASES A KB

I have had .45 and .357 sig rounds setback from rechambering. Rotate them out and shoot them up and buy new every few months. $20.00 for carry ammo is cheaper than a coffin.

I actually load a full mag insert it into the gun and chamber a round then top of the mag giving me 14 rounds in my XD45. When I go to the range I dump that mag shoot my practice rounds then reload a different mag to keep in the gun. I do the same thing with my carry gun. In my night stand I have the XD45 and 1 loaded spare mag with 2 empty mags in my shooting bag. The same with my carry gun in the other nightstand. Thus my mags get rotated as well as the bullets. By the way NO KIDS in the house if we have company everything is locked in the safe.

I do a similar thing with my carry ammo. Every trip to the range, I shoot the first three or four rounds of my carry stuff that has been in my gun. That way I can see how those first few shots go, and it helps to let you know how the gun will react in a SHTF situation. After those, I drop the mag and unload the rest of them to refill with FMJ. Thanks to pistolgear, I have 5 mags, and they all get a good rotation at the range. Once I'm done, I check them to see if they need cleaned, which is usually every other range trip, and reload about 3 of them with the JHP stuff. I keep a 12+1 in my XD40, a spare 12 in my nightstand, a spare 12 in my truck, and whatever carry stuff I have left goes to my two 10 rounders.

I never unload it at night or any other time and re-cycle the same round. If for some reason I have unloaded it, I load another round from one of my 10 round mags and then re-insert the loaded 12 rounder. Then I'll empty out the 10 rounder and put the cycled round at the bottom.

I have had a set back one or two times, the thing I notice the most is my unwillingness to reload my chamber brass due to the chewed up rim. As I'm sure you know and especially with the XD don't chamber a round unless it is striped from the magazine, do so will put great strain on the flat spring type extractor of the XD, so far my only complaint.
