proper break in
What is the general standard that you all go by when breaking in a gun? How many rounds though the gun to considered it broken in?

This is probably a very good question to ask, and here is my two pesos worth.
I have never broken one in with less than as much ammo as I could afford to shoot that day. Not saying it is right, but it has not failed me yet. Be ready........ .... stand by.... we are about to get flamed..... you for not searching, and me for speaking against the greater good.. Main thought here, enjoy it often, and clean it when you get home.

I meant, how many rounds do you shoot total to consider it broken in, not just in one day, but total overall. 500? 1000?
btw, i searched for it, but only got a bunch of posts about breaking in houses or breaking guns... maybe i should search a little more.. |

Some custom gun makers with tight tolerances suggest 500 rds for break in - or wear in. Most guns like the XD need no set amount of rds. My procedure is to run a box of ammo thru it, field strip and check it for problems, then shoot them till they break.

Like R Dub said. I've always heard that 500 rounds was the norm for breaking in a postol. I guess that to be true in mst cases, but I've had pistols shoot well from amost the first round to one that took about 800 rounds to feel like it was broken in.

it may be just me, my XD was really "tight" feeling when i first took it out (trigger, etc) after the 500th round it felt a bit more "loose" as in the break didnt seem so harsh. when i hit the 1000th round it seemed to just really open up.
i'm up to 2000 rounds through it since i purchased it in december. i'm chewing the heads off the targets, blowing the center out of the targets, and it doesnt seem to take any effort on my part. my groupings arent the best by any means. but i went from a near shotgun like pattern on my targets to keeping them within the head sized shape on the target. and it seems to get better and better. so really i think the break in period is really a combination of.. how many rounds fired till the gun loosens up, and how many more rounds it takes for you to get used to the gun. it could be 300, 500 or 1000. cheers
