I disagree somewhat. My petite wife loves my XD40sc more than her own XD9sc. We both find the XD40sc to be quite managable.

my grrl had a taurus 9mm for a yr, but shot better with my xd45 service the first time she shot it. She handled the kick better on the 45. Ive got a xd40sc and we both think it shoots about the same. maybe a small difference.

In my experience, the recoil is fairly similar in terms of strength, but they feel different. The .45 is a slower "shove", while the .40 is a quicker "snap", if this makes any sense. Your best bet is to rent the .40 and shoot them side-by-side.

Save the Americans--end abortion now.

I absolutely agree. It's not a matter of being manageable it's just different. You need to try both but I find the 45ACP less annoying than the 40S&W. I can't explain why but I actually like shooting my 45 more than my 9SC.

I think you may you will be more aware of the recoil of 40SC than the 9mm. It's just sharper feeling...it's hard to explain.

I just did a seat of the pants test between my XD9SC and XD45 Service. Let me first state that I am not one who would only trust my life to a caliber with a 4 in it. In fact I was trained that multiple smaller wound channels are better than a single larger one due to increased bleeding. So my thoughts are that with a gun of smaller caliber with less recoil I could put more rounds on target. The test was:

1.) Ease to conceal,

2.) Ease to draw

3.) Initial accuracy

4.) Number of rounds on target in 3 sec. That was the shortest time I could accurately measure.

All shots were from 15 yards cause if anyone is going to get a head start it's going to be me and if I can hit the target at 15 yards I can hit it at 7. The targets were 10" pie plates. Holster was CTAC which could handle both guns. Each shooting test was 20 rounds from each gun. The 9SC has Pearce mag extentions and the 45 has TFO sights.

1.) No question the 9SC was easier to conceal but in no way was the 45 Service difficult to conceal. The 9SC was concealable in more positions while the XD45 was location sensitive.

2.) In this test I thought the shorter SC grip sometimes more difficult to grab than the longer service grip. Here again this was location sensitive.

3.) In initial accuracy I found the XD45 consistantly easier to get on target and more accurate than the shorter SC. I could easily keep the 45 in 5 shot 4" groups with 2 of groups at 2" with a flyer. The 9SC had 5" to 7" groups. The SC tended to be scattered around the left center of the plate while the 45 clustered around the middle spreading horizontally. Could be sight radius, could be the different hand position needed for the smaller grip.

4.) The multi shot test was the most interesting because I could get no more bullets on target in 3 sec. with the 9SC than I could with the 45. The shorter sight radius and was harder to reaquire the target. I found this troubling because it shot my belief that low recoil meant more round fired.

Again this was a very shade tree test and probably doesn't mean anything to anyone but me but I'm thinking my 9SC may be getting replaced by a 45 Compact. Maybe I'll just add another to my collection.

I would like someone who has a 45 and a 40SC try the same test especially some one with a 45 Compact.
