Question slide back/ barrel tipped upwards

A buddy of mine was checking out my XD40SC yesterday. He pulled the slide back and noticed that the barrel tipped upwards. He then told me that he hoped that I wouldn't try to shoot accurately beyond ten feet. Because the barrel tips up when the slide goes back it will always shoot high.

I tried to explain to him that the bullet would be long gone before that happened. He just couldn't wrap his head around that. Am I missing something? Don't Glocks react the same way? Other than my XD, a Glock 27 which I rented and a 38 revolver which I rented I don't know if that is a common design or do most other autoloaders keep the barrel inline at all times?

tell your buddy to go shoot it at 15 yards, then tell him to shut up, then tell him to know what he's talking about before making you think your gun sucks!

It's designed that way to help with extraction of the spent cartridge and the chambering of the new one.

Tell your buddy he needs to get better educated on firearms principles if he wants to keep from making more dumb-a$$ed statements.

Your buddy is an idiot! There seem to be a lot of those around. Semi-auto pistols based upon the Browning design all tip down at the breech end to unlock the slide. IF it didn't the slide couldn't move. Enjoy your new pistol and ignore your friend.

Wow, quick replies. I didn't bother to argue the point. I just needed to vent. Thanks

Exactly. Other guns do it too, and you're right, p255, in saying that the bullet is well clear of the muzzle before the recoil impulse drives the slide to move and initiate cycling. Seize this opportunity to educate your friend.

Is your buddy a glock guy? No--I'm not making fun of glock guys. My point is that perhaps he likes a different brand of handguns and just wants to make fun of your XD. Obviously he has a lot to learn about handguns.
Obviously SA wouldn't release a combat pistol with a design flaw that makes the gun inacurate beyond 10 feet.

Thanks for the laugh!

Frank
