i did my range qualification the day of my CHL class. Class started at 8:15AM and we all got out at 6:30PM. I used my CZ 75B instead of my XD9 service. As long as you know how your gun works, range safety, and you've practiced before you'll be okay. you need 175 points to pass out of 250...if you hit center mass at 3 and 7 yards, you're good to go (even if you miss everything at 15 yards, which you really shouldn't). And yes, there were some idiots in the class. Their answer to every hypo was "i'll shoot them with my gun."

One thing I really liked about my instructor was that he had brought two guns along with him. One was a 9mm....I forget what brand and the other was a Smith & Wesson Model 10. Anyone in the class that had brought someone elses gun was able to try one of his. One guy had brought his brothers 44mag Desert Eagle and the instructor convinced him to try the 9mm. He shot a 245. One lady wanted nothing to do with semi-autos so she made the Model 10 dance and shot a perfect 250. We all cheered her on. It was a great day, those of us that have been pistoleros for a few years or more were giving advice to the beginners. I had a guy who was so nervous he could not get the bullet on paper. I spent a few minutes with him on grip, trigger and sights and he shot 235. I made quite a few new friends that day, and we get together from time to time to shoot.

It's easy. I went through the class last November and shot a 249 of 250 (damn that "flyer"). The classroom instruction was spent paying attention and attempting to not let the dunces (yes, every class has a few) get you down and trying to stay awake. The written exam was easy and is nothing to sweat at all.
Planning ahead, I mailed my completed application and all related materials back into the state with a return reciept (seemed like a good idea with all the personal information enclosed). The state received my application on December 11, 2006 and as of this date, my application, when checked on the state website, is listed as "processing application". Seems that the state is still backlogged pretty badly and 90 to 120 days seems to be the norm these days even though they shoot for 60 days. In the time since I've taken the test, I've received two new gunbelts- one a Tucker gunleather double thick, the other a 5.11 operator, a Tucker gunleather HF-1 holster and a Tucker angled double mag pouch and a Bladetech Stingray holster and mag pouch. I figure the leather set ups'll be good for the winter time and heavier clothing and the Bladetechs better for the summer months. Keep in mind that the Tucker stuff is made to order. Now, if that damned license would just get here...

When I took mine last summer I mailed in the stuff and waited, and waited, and waited. Some sort of problem occurred involving my instructor's ID number on the certificate. They never notified me of the problem, they claimed that they notified the instructor. When I got hold of the instructor they said that they just found out about the problem, even though it had held things up for weeks. The whole time, even after I received my CHL, the website said "processing application". So don't rely on that at all. In fact when I called the state about my PIN for the website they gave it to me, but it wasn't until after the problem was resolved that they mailed it to me as they are supposed to. So when I called for the PIN the snag had already been found, but they didn't tell me. It wasn't until a few weeks later that I finally got it out of them.
