Cool Melonite Finish? ? ?

I just bght a SA XD9 in service grade from Gander Mtn. Unbeknownst to me, the store received the gun in June 2005. It IS new. Does anyone know if it would have the Melonite finish or the previous finish? Any special care required? So far I really like the gun. Great grip for my hand. Trigger, although long, is light and crisp. 15 rnd mags are a plus.

It should have the old finish. Melonite was started around April 2006.

I agree with elkhorn although I thought it was May 2006. Whichever month it doesn't have the new Melonite finish. It will be fine, just keep it clean and well oiled.

Melonite is not a finish it it a metal treatment that is done before the finish is put on.

Do a search, especially in the Rusty Tales section. There is a ton of info on this. I had the same problem only mine bought in December 06, was made in early 02. i took it back and they exchanged it.

Like has been said, Melonite is a Salt-Nitride bath process that actually treats down into the metal. The Black is a finish on top of that. It makes a big difference. Melonite and Tennifer are the same thing only different trade names.

I contacted SA and here was there reply to my Melonite question
Dear Keith,

Thank you for contacting Springfield regarding your pistol. I greatly
apologize for not getting back to you sooner. We have been so busy.
Your pistol has the Melonite finish. If you have any further questions
or concerns please feel free to contact me back. Have a great day!

Best regards,

here is the response i got from SA regarding my XD
(Your XD was manufactured in October of 2005 as a
model # XD9104HCSP06. No, you do not have the Melonite finish.
However, you do still have the lifetime warranty on your pistol. If you
ever have a problem with the finish, or anything else with your pistol,
do not hesitate to call Customer Service at 800-680-6866.

Thank you.

kind of odd my gun is a later manufacture but it doesnt have the melonite wheras yours does.
