They'll just roll your fingertips over a scanner and your prints will be digitally saved.
It's part of the AFIS system that most modern law enforcement agencies use. No more messy ink. Just relax your hand and let the technician do their job. It's easy- don't sweat it. bd |

![]() Its a really easy process. I had to do it one time when I worked for the Dept. of Homeland Security. Thats the only way they fingerprint people. It looked like a long narrow scanner. They place your fingertip on a "window" that is covering the scanner glass. When they roll your finger across it from left to right, that little "window" follows along with your finger so it gets a good scan. Yeah, say bye bye to that nasty black ink.

The difference is that when you do it digitally you get your CWL in about 2 weeks, compared to 45-90 days with the old fashioned ink. |

Here in Mecosta County Michigan the county uses live scan for CPLs. The city PD uses ink.

Most use and prefer ink. The LiveScan costs the Dept money. I know this because I just did my prints today for my Florida permit. The packages goes out tomorrow and I wait 10 weeks.

Ohio is using this for their CCW but for some reason my hands were sweating (perhaps due to the 85 degree room we were in???) and it couldn't get a good read. It was ink for me.

Uhhh maybe most who don't have a scanner prefer ink. I know my county sheriff's office has used inkless systems for at least the past 4 years.
I've had my prints done there twice - once 3 years ago for Civil Air Patrol and 3 months ago for CCW. Two different technicians on two different machines. Both technicians told me that they *vastly* preferred the inkless system for one simple reason: easy do-overs. They can get the prints exactly right without having to start over. I did an inked system for my Utah CCW and it was a total PITA for the technician, not to mention the mess it left on my hands. Inkless scanners are greatness. The old system required a sort of oil, but the one my local dept uses now just requires that the finger pads be slightly damp. The cost savings to the department are realized through increased productivity of the officer(s) doing the prints. They can get more done with fewer screw-ups in less time and they can transmit prints digitally if need be. |
