XD40 sc or HK USPc 40 LEM

Just got a letter from the sheriff's office that I can pick up my carry license. I will probably be getting the xd but there is something about the hk that calls to me (maybe it's the extra 1/2 inch of barrel length and slightly longer grip). Does anyone have any experience with both? I wish Springfield made a .40 compact like the the .45 compact. I'm in NY so the extra grip length doesn't do anything for me. This will be my first hand gun purchase.

I have owned a USP40 and a USP40C. I greatly prefer the grip design and feel on the XD. The XD's slightly smaller size also makes it a much better carry weapon, in my opinion.

If I were to buy an H&K these days, I would not choose the USP. I'd go with the new P2000 in .40SW as it was designed from the ground-up to be more compact, more carry-friendly.

I love my XDs and hated the USP. A buddy of mine had one for about a year. Went back to the manufactorer once and then to the smith twice. Lots of FTEs and FTFs. After the year he sold to a pawn shop because the gun store wouldn't buy it back. The dealer I use now doesn't even carry USPs. Says he gets lots of them back in with problems and was tired of dealing with it.

Well I'm definatly leaning away from the HK even though it's what Jack Bauer uses so it's got to be good! I'm going to take a trip up toward buffalo tomorrow. The gun shop close to me had 1 used xd in stock and about a total of 20 guns. When I picked up my permit the county pistol permit clerk asked what I was gonna get and when I said an XD she said alot of people were getting them lately.

Welcome, nojoka! Definitely go with the XD. You won't regret it.

I have never shot one, but I was always under the impression that HK was top of the line. I wanted to get a 9mm USP compact or P2000 SK as my second pistol. Now am I wondering...

HK makes some great SMGs for military/police use. But I've never been impressed with their pistols imported into the US. DoD looked into changing over to HKs to replace the M9 but the eval program bombed really quick. The contract for the eval program stayed for quite a while but the pistol didn't hold up to any of the standards of use DoD wanted. IMHO, I will never own any of the current HK production line.

the usp is a beautiful pistol, it is much more technical than an XD, inexperienced shooters don't know how to deal with all the mods you have the option of making, ie, spring weight and tigger choice decocking lever, and the upkeep is more difficult, more moving parts to clean, but if you know this coming in, you will enjoy the usp greatly

My younger brother has a .40 USP Compact and it shoots really well. Great trigger and I really like the grip. I would probably have a tough time debating which one I like more. The price totally sold me for the XD though, and it really does shoot beautifully.
