Passed My CCW Today - With Pics

Well I took my CCW class today and passed the written and shooting tests.

I got 100 on the written (not too hard) and a 249 on the shooting. I missed a perfect score by one point because I was not shooting well. I caught a low flyer in the 7 ring. The instructor said it is not bad for someone who has only shot a pistol less the a dozen times but I was still dissapointed.

I am not sure if the tests are then same in every state but here is what we did:

5 Rounds in the gun for each stage (I might be off on the lower distance)

3 yards - 1 round from the ready position, 2 sets of 2 rounds from ready
3 yards - 1 round from gun at side, 2 sets of 2 rounds from gun at side
5 yards - 1 round from the ready position, 2 sets of 2 rounds from ready
5 yards - 1 round from gun at side, 2 sets of 2 roundsfrom gun at side
7 yards - 1 round from the ready position, 2 sets of 2 rounds from ready
7 yards - 1 round from gun at side, 2 sets of 2 rounds from gun at side
10 yards - 1 round from gun at side, 2 sets of 2 rounds from gun at side
10 yards - all 5 rounds at once from gun at side
15 yards - 1 round from gun at side, 2 sets of 2 rounds from gun at side
15 yards - all 5 rounds at once from gun at side

I need to work on dry firing and concentrating on the front sight.

I was alittle freaked out on the firing line because there were 12 people in a row and to be honest some of them should never touch a weapon again. I saw everything from negligence, gun jams, sights falling off guns, wrong ammo choice for weapon. There were pistols with everything from a 22 auto that kept failing to lightweight revolvers with loads that were way too hot for the gun and shooter.

I think everyone should have the right to own and carry a gun but some people need to take a basic class and actually fire a weapon before going for their CCW.

Sorry for the rant

On a better note the instructor was a funny bastard. He was not only an ex cop but an ex competition shooter. He had a target that he showed us which had 49 rounds through the center and one right outside it from a very small flyer. He has a custom Wilson Combat 1911.

There was one guy in the class who had a $2500 Wilson Combat 1911 and he didn't even shoot pistols that much. It almost looked like the pistol shot itself because he was next to me and I payed alot of attention to how it operated. I also got nailed in the head a few times from his ejections and found some brass in my bag when I got home.

I see alot of tweaks in my XD9s future from Springer Precision.

Congratulations! That is some fine shooting. I can identify with your comments about some of the others you saw at the range. Some people were just not meant to pick up a gun, let alone carry one. At least you got some free brass.

No apology needed. It seems like common sense that anyone pursuing a CCW permit should know how to use their weapon safely and effectively prior to showing up for class. Unfortunately, I've found that common sense is in desperately short supply in most places.

I'm taking my CCW class next weekend. Hopefully the firing line won't be as unnerving as yours was.

Wow, they let you keep your target? Here in Texas, they quickly destroy the targets, and you are given a pass or fail on the written and shooting part.

Congrats on the test. Had the same expeirence in my class. There were a few people that with their gun skills probaply put themselves in more danger by having a gun with them.

Is the shooting part timed or can you take your time to line up the sights? I take my CHL course in about 1 week.

I'm a little more curious about the drills that you performed. Could you provide more detail about the ready position and from the side? I think I know what you're talking about, but if you could describe each position, that would be great. Also, you didn't mention which state you were in. I thought the shooting qualification was pass/fail. At least that's what I've heard. I think a 70% hit rate is required here to pass the shooting qualification.

This thread brought back memories of my first CCW class. The lady next to me keeped shooting my target instead of hers. It was really hard for the instructor to score mine! He finally figured out what was going on after I told him twice what was happening.
