anyway I can tell the dob of a XD40 service sn;US477*** thanks Doug

The serial numbers on XD's are assigned at random. The only way I'm aware of is to contact SA and see if they'll look it up. If you have the little envelope containing the test-fired case, that date should be pretty close to it's "born-on" date, also.
