I just recently bought my first XD40. I have heard that the older models had rust problems, but that the new models were coated with a melonite finish. First question....
1. Is the melonite only a finish on the gun or is it more like the tennifer on glocks which penetrates into the metal? I assume that if it is only a finish that normal wear/tear could remove said finish? Second question... 2. I just bought my XD40 yesterday and the shop owner said that he just got it in the previous week. Is there anyway to tell whether or not it is melonite or pre-melonite? last question... 3. I am interested in polishing the barrel to a nice shiny chrome like finish....has anyone ever attempted this if so, how did it turn out? will it remove the 'melonite' finish? Will the barrel be prone to rust? I guess that wasn;t the last question...but hey, who's counting... Any pics on the polishing job would be great .

1) It is a metal treatment, and not a finish. You're correct, it's similar to Glock's Tenifer - basically the same thing with a different name. 2) All XDs manufactured after April 2006 have the Melonite treatment. You can call Springfield Armory and give them your gun's serial number if you're not sure when yours was made. 3) A normal polish or finish removal will not affect the metal treatment. If you cut into the slide for a sight change or new serrations, it will. The black OEM finish on the gun helps protect against rust and holds oil well; removing it will make the gun more prone to rusting, though it's not a complete black and white difference. I'd recommend re-finishing it if you want it silver; hard chrome is a good choice for that. Congrats on your new gun, by the way! Welcome aboard. Andy |
