Question Shipping via FFL???

I know an individual can legally ship a long gun across state lines, but can anyone confirm for me if it is legal for an individual to ship a handgun across state lines or does an individual have to use an FFL to ship a handgun across state lines? If an individual must use an FFL to ship a handgun, what is the going rate for this?

Thanks in advance!!

It is legal for a non-licensee to ship to a license across state lines. Must be declared at common carrier and must be shipped over night.

I've always wondered...

I know it's legal to ship a slide by itself with no guts. So could one take the gun down and ship it in, say, 2 boxes without doing it overnight?
