Bedside weapon and extra ammo storage

I keep my XD within reach of the bed with one full mag. I've been thinking about keeping another mag loaded with it in case the crap really hits the fan but I'm not sure how usefull that would really be. Do most folks keep a 2nd loaded mag with the bedside pistol? If so, is it in any sort of mag pouch or carrier? I had considdered a mag pouch on one of those Bianchi clip buckle duty belts so I could throw the belt on over my pjs or boxer shorts but I'm not too sure there. I normally wouldn't have pockets and I don't want to be firing with a gun in one hand and a mag in the other. I'm better when I shoot with both hands on the XD.

I have what I carry by the bedside and my "others" not too far away. As for the spare mags... I have a dual mag pouch which I wear so I have 2 spares with the gun. The other one has a mag in it and also a spare mag. Is it necessary, I think not. I'm not planning to get into a gun battle (using 37 rounds) with my XDs but it makes me feel good.

It all depends on where I'm going. If I am going to a shadier side of town, which is a lot in Albuquerque, I carry an extra magazine. As far as bedside preparation, I have the XD loaded, and a shotgun nearby. If I'm alone and I hear someone break in, I'll likely grab the shotty, call the police, and rack a round. If the situation is different, I'll grab the XD and my surefire and clear the house. It all depends. Anyway, that was a long answer to a short question. If you live alone, I highly recommend a shotgun as opposed to a pistol. It gives you intimidation and dominance over most other forms of protection. Remember that your first obligation is safety. Don't be quick to put yourself in danger for a TV. On the other hand, it never hurts to have some extra ammo ready.

If you need more than 16+1 (or 12+1) rounds, you are officially having a bad day.

Seriously, barring malfunction drill, that's a double on each of 5 bad guys, with 3 or more left, in case you missed some.

More than one pistol in bedroom. If I need more than one mag -- I don't think I'll have time for any sort of reload -- I'll be too busy, if I'm still mobile. If the situation reaches a point where I need more than 17 rounds -- I'll be using the pistol to allow me to get to something with more "authority" -- and it will be a very dire situation (most likely).

I keep an extra magazine and a spare gun in my bedroom.

I have a G-code double magazine holder with a paddle attachment, so I could easily slip it onto a belt. Most times I just drop my spare mag in my back pocket if I'm wearing pants.

I have a shotty next the bed with 5 rounds in the gun and 4 rounds in the side saddle. Sometimes I leave my carry gun lay on the dresser overnight but most of the time they are in a digital safe thats sits there and that only takes a second to open.

If it gets to where 10 or 12 rounds from a shotty wont do the job by the time the cops get there then the person is bullet proof. If I have to go check the house when something goes bump in the night, I take a handgun and send my dog upstairs (our bedroom is in the basement). The shotty is more for a DEFINATE invasion, ie: door is kicked in or window breaks.

I dont like the idea of sneaking around the corner with a barrel long enough to be grabbed and I practice ALOT with my handguns and shotty. Shooting USPSA matches with both has been an incredible teaching tool for fast sight aquisition and fast follow up shots. I did take a local NRA sponsored course in house clearing techniques and home defense tactics, as well.

Normaly once someone realizes that your armed and confronting them, their fight or flight instinct kicks in and they will flee. They have nothing to gain by staying in YOUR home and having a gun battle with you.

That's like asking, If I could, would I carry a second spare tire in my car. YES!! Why, because I am one of those that has run over an object in the road, while driving at night, that blew ont both tires on one side of the car. Along with being stranded, I was out of cell range, and it was raining. Needless to say I slept there till the morning when the law showed up with my wife in the front seat. She had gone to the sheriffs office to report me not showing up at home and since I drive down one of the roads they patrol, they took her with them.

I not only keep two mags at bedside but carry two extra mags as well.

That's the old Boy Scout in me kicking in!!!

By the way fleetdog, that is one cute pooch you have in your avitar.

Like others have said, my XD is for back-up while at home. 12 Gauge in the closet with 5 rounds of 00 Buckshot in it. 12+1 in the XD40, and a spare mag. If I ever hear anything the XD goes in the waistband while I carry the shotgun. Which will be used to make it back to the room where my 16 gauge loaded with buckshot is locked in a case.
