Inserting the mag without pulling the slide back

Got a question:

Is it ok to put a fully loaded mag into the gun without pulling the slide back? The mag will go in and click into place, but I don't want to do any damage.

The reason for this question is that I'm going to start carrying the gun in the car with me for self-defense. It may sound strange, but I'm not yet comfortable with carrying in the car with one in the pipe. This will no doubt change over time.

How many of you out there carry in the car with a round chambered? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thank you,
-Bill

This is not a problem at all, in some guns it is easier to remove one round from the mag to allow easier seating of the mag.

Yeah, thats perfectly fine...

Here in Louisiana, your vehicle is an extension of your home, so I can do anything I want in my car with my xd... When I do carry, its in my car, cause i dont have my ccp yet... and about the 1 in the chamber... even if you got into a wreck with the xd in your car, its almost impossible for it to fire because of the safeties built in... so unless you pull the trigger... you should be fine...

take it this is ur first gun?

no, inserting a mag wont do any damage if u dont chamber a round. however in a sticky situation u may not have time to rack the slide. keep ur finger off the trigger until ur ready to shoot and you'll be fine. the xd is a fine weapon for defense with a round in the chamber, with out, its just a fine piece of metal and plastic.

It wont hurt anything. It took me 6 months before I felt comfortable enough to leave mine loaded in the house. What helped me was everytime I went to the range I practiced unloading it not by pulling the trigger but by loading it then droping the magazine then pulling the slide to drop the bullet. I would do this at home also and leave it loaded for 2 or 3 days then unload it. Eventually I became comfortable enough and it was left loaded.

Remember the proper way to manually unload the gun is to drop the magazine first. Then pull the slide back to drop round.

Also do what makes you feel comfortable. Thier are those that will chime in and tell you that you should not carry it unless it is carried loaded but its better for you to carry it the way you feel comfortable then to carry it loaded and injure yourself because you are not comfortable carrying it loaded. Just keep in mind that if you are ever in a situation that requires you to draw your weapon you might not have time or a free hand to rack the slide.

Take your time and when you are ready to carry it loaded do it and dont let anyone rush you into carrying it loaded if you are not comfortable yet.

The answer to your question is that it is perfectly OK, as others have stated.

I wanted to say that if you are nervous about carrying one in the chamber while the gun is in your car, think about what a handgun goes through on a police officers duty belt. It gets bumped, scraped, jostled, bounced, dropped, thrown, sat on, fell on, rained on, dragged through the mud, hit, twisted, on and on and on. How often do you hear about a police officers gun firing from all of this abuse while holstered? The last time I remember was from a very long time ago when a Portland, OR, police officers holstered gun was hit with a baton during a training exercise, and the bullet hit the officer in the leg. That was more than a decade ago.

Full mag

When I carry my 1911 or my Xd for Defence I put a loaded mag in and chamber a round. drop the mag and load another in the mag then reinsert the mag. I have been doing it for years with a 1911 and continue with my XD. about the only thing I won't do with my XD that I have done with my 1911 is "Mexican Carry".

Dont know about the XD but with most other guns the best practice is to load the chamber from the mag. when loading from the mag the extractor dosent get forced over the rim of the shell, it slides in place from the motion of rideing the feed ramp in to the chamber. Slamming the slide home on a bullet in the hole can weaken or even damage your extractor.
I make it a common practice now to only load from the mag, remove the mag and replace the chamberd round.

The only handgun I know that you can do this to and not cause any damage is the Berreta 92. There may be others, but when I bought my 92, it said in the manual that this was OK.
